62. Baker Farm -- From Walden By Henry Thoreau, With Notes And Analysis
baker Farm. Return to the Thoreau homepage. baker Farm epitomizes for methe problem of explaining Thoreauvian values to the people around us.
http://www.kenkifer.com/Thoreau/baker_f.htm
Baker Farm
F rom my first reading of Walden , "Baker Farm" has been one of my favorite chapters. All of Walden is an explanation of Thoreau's philosophy of life, but here he gets the chance to explain his lifestyle to a poor family who could directly profit from it. Thus, he explains how he lives very simply and practically. However, the message is ignored, as the family is content with following customs rather than thinking out new solutions. B aker Farm epitomizes for me the problem of explaining Thoreauvian values to the people around us. A Thoreauvian understanding of the world can solve a lot of practical problems, even if the person is not interested in meditation or the beauty of Nature. Indeed, the current mode of living, with people on a consumer treadmill, never getting an opportunity to enjoy the material possessions that they have heaped up, while damaging both the environment and their own health, is very difficult to defend, if ever examined. However, people do not examine the whole problem but simply react to one issue at a time, often in a contractory manner. And thus, they cannot see any value in making sweeping lifestyle changes. T his chapter also provides an effective encapsulation of the Thoreauvian view of life.

Evolution of the microscope This microscope, developed by John Cuff, magnified specimens up to 320 times their size. Cuff's microscope improved the mechanics of earlier models. (M-030 00294)
Henry Baker was a naturalist and a member of the British Royal Society. He made few scientific discoveries of his own but replicated observations made by others. Baker is noted for developing a system for teaching speech- and hearing-impaired students.
Naturalist Henry Baker used the Cuff microscope to examine many geological and biological materials. This drawing, taken from Employment for the Microscope (1784), shows microorganisms revived with water after being taken from a grain of blighted wheat.

Henry Rockwell Baker Memorial Community Center
    101 S. 2nd St.
This Tudor style building was dedicated on May 1, 1926, to the memory of Henry Rockwell Baker, and to St. Charles veterans of World War I. Henry Baker (1891-1914), the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Baker, had been a star football player for the St. Charles High School team. He died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-three. Henry Baker's portrait, painted by Paul Trebilcock, hangs in the main lounge of the Baker Community Center near portraits of his parents. When the Community Center opened in 1926, it contained a lounge, a kitchen, a women's club room, a meeting room for Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls, an auditorium with a stage, and a swimming pool. The pool was later covered and a three-lane bowling alley took its place. The bowling alley was removed to make way for a youth center called "The Keg" which flourished in the 1960s. Today, the Baker Community Center houses St. Charles Park District offices. It still provides meeting rooms for clubs and for some Park District activities.

    Henry Baker
Born in London on May 8, 1698, Henry Baker was a significant contributor to the popularization of microscopy and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. During his younger years, he served as an apprentice to a bookseller and later made his fortune by devising and practicing a system to teach hearing and speech impaired children. Baker's achievements were noticed by the writer Daniel Defoe and inspired his novel The History of the Life and Adventures of Duncan Campbell , the title character of which is a deaf conjurer. Defoe's youngest daughter, Sophia, was also intrigued by Baker and the couple married in 1729. Having attained wealth early in his life, Baker was left with ample time to pursue his many interests. Perhaps influenced by his father-in-law, Baker was often involved in the arts and was a writer and translator of poetry. He was also connected with Defoe in the launching of the publication The Universal Spectator and Weekly Journal and was a founder of the Society of the Arts, established in 1754.

I set out one afternoon to go a-fishing to Fair Haven, through the woods, to eke out my scanty fare of vegetables. My way led through Pleasant Meadow, an adjunct of the Baker Farm, that retreat of which a poet has since sung, beginning, "Thy entry is a pleasant field, Which some mossy fruit trees yield Partly to a ruddy brook, By gliding musquash undertook, And mercurial trout, Darting about." "And here a poet builded, In the completed years, For behold a trivial cabin That to destruction steers."
