The first answer that most people give is that sex is for procreation. American Theories of Polygenesis Introduction Monogenesis, as the term was understood by natural historians in the middle of the nineteenth century, was the theory that all human beings shared the same origin. Polygenesis, by contrast, was the theory that at least some of the races had a separate origin. Because the Bible had been almost universally understood as maintaining that all human beings were descended from a single pair, there had been few upholders of polygenesis in Christian Europe throughout most of its history. However, in the middle of the nineteenth century polygenesis became widespread, particularly in the United States. Part of the reason for this was the problem of reconciling the biblical account with certain new pieces of historical and scientific evidence. Prae-Adamitae was published in 1655, but within a year of publication, he was forced to recant. A Guided Tour of Morningside Campus The following is an informal tour around Columbia's Morningside Campus starting at Low Library, continuing to Hamilton Hall the South East side of campus, Butler Library, the South West side of campus and then up again for the Northern end. Explanations for building names are given, as well as short histories and some lesser known Columbia trivia. Low Memorial Library This was the first academic building erected on the Morningside campus. It was the gift of President Seth Low, in memory of his father, Abiel Abbot Low, who was a wealthy merchant in the China tea trade. Begun in 1895 and completed in 1897, it is the largest all-granite, domed structure in North America (105.5 feet high and 70 feet across) and was once voted one of the ten most handsome buildings in North America by a jury of leading architects. Now the main administration building of the University, Low was originally built as the main University Library.

On 20 January 1919 the faculty of Columbia College resolved that "the requirement in Philosophy A and History A be replaced by a course in Contemporary Civilization." Curricular decisions usually don't reverberate beyond the college campus where they're implemented, and the founders had no idea that they were creating what has been described as "probably the most famous course ever in the American curriculum." And this committee in turn enlisted the aid of several younger faculty members and set about writing a syllabus to be used the following fall. What was this new course in contemporary civilization? How was it going to provide wisdom and a new understanding? Butler was closest to the mark when he spoke of "the realities of life," for the phrase most commonly used - in Columbia College announcements, in the course's syllabus, in descriptions of the course to outsiders, by the course's teachers - was that CC, as the course quickly came to be abbreviated, was an attempt to deal with "the insistent problems of the present."

The unveiling and dedication on the battlefield of Gettysburg, July 3, 1913, of the memorial erected in honor of Major-General Wells and officers and men of the First Vermont Cavalry, on the confederate Avenue, in front of Round Top, was an occasion never to be forgotten by all who were present, men of the North, and men of the South. This charge of the First Vermont Cavalry was so swallowed up in the multitudinous incidents of the great battle that few have followed it as it deserves. I am prod to say that Vermont, however, remembers well her gallant sons in this soul-stirring feat, and that by a happy though the Legislature of the state made an appropriation for a monument to be erected near the spot from which the regiment started upon its memorable charge. /s/ N. Sir: We have the honor to transmit report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1912. The officers and employees of the commission are as follows: Three commissioners, one engineer, one assistant superintendent, one rodman, one store and time keeper, one messenger, one hostler, and four guards. Employees by the day: Two inspectors, three artisans. Laborers for the spring, summer, and autumn months are as follows: For July, 1911, 35 laborers; August, 36; September, 36; October, 34; November, 34; December, 5; January, 1912, 7; February, 2; March, 6; April, 28; May, 37; June, 37. LAND The land purchased during the year was as follows: A portion of the Culp farm, lying east of East Confederate Avenue, containing 80.7 acres, and a small tract of said farm, lying west of said avenue, containing 2.02 acres. A tract of land containing 1.83 acres was acquired from William Bushman for constructing an avenue from the Taneytown Road near Gen. Meade's headquarters to the Baltimore Pike, passing through the positions of Rugg's and Kinzie's United States Artillery. An additional plat adjoining the Bushman tract, containing 1.09 acres, will be required to be purchased to complete said avenue, and belongs to C. C. Rider, who asks a large sum for a very small portion of land in view of the bids having been already received for building said avenue. We respectfully recommend that the said plat be acquired by condemnation proceedings.

SIR: We submit the annual report for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 1914, and ending June 30, 1915. The officers and employees are substantially the same as on the roll of year 1914. Lieut. Col. John P. Nicholson, chairman; Maj. Charles A. Richardson, commissioner; engineer, Lieut. Col. E. B. Cope; 2 assistant superintendents, 1 rodman, messenger and hostler, 4 guards, 27 artisans, 4 laborers, and 5 laborers with teams. The artisans have improved in their work. The material and appliances used by them being furnished by the commission, is of the best quality and there is no incentive to slight details as often done in contracts.
