Lecture 2: A problem from the Ahmes papyrus Egyptian mathematics Egyptian mathematics -3000 -2000 is found written in Hieroglyphics . It was carved in pyramids and temples by priests and scribes and concerns taxation, building design, land measurement, restoration of boundaries after floods and religious ritual such as the sizes and shapes of altars. It was also written ink on papyrus scrolls, preserved by storage in pots in a dry climate. This text was signed by Ahmes, ~-1650 and contains problems and solutions. It is written in Hieratic (cursive) script which was translated by first transliterating back into hieroglyphics and then using Rosetta stone and other keys to deduce the sound and meaning.
