Devolution - What you can expect On April 1, 2003, the Yukon government's Department of Energy, Mines and Resources assumed the regulatory and management responsibility for forestry, lands and minerals from the Federal government. We are working very hard to make the transition as smooth as possible. For the most part, it will be "business as usual".

This map is continually evolving. Suggestions are welcome Ask the expert Yukon is situated on the periphery of several prolific oil and gas producing regions. Alberta and British Columbia are to the south, the Northwest Territories to the east and Alaska to the west. Yukon is unexplored and its potential untapped, offering distinct opportunities. The Yukon Government assumed responsibility for its oil and gas resources in 1998 and has now established a competitive regulatory regime and fiscal regime . The intent is to facilitate and foster new oil and gas activity.

Apparently the cabinet is concerned that the Management Plan does not allow for guaranteed road access through the park to the Rusty Springs mineral claims that lie just outside the park. (These claims have not been proven up as an economic deposit and there is no proposal for mine development on the table). In reality, the mining company in question was content with the management plan provisions, and agreement had been reached with the First Nation on the options. For example, if a mine ever were viable, there is a road option to access the claims that would go around the park, instead of through the heart of the sensitive Fishing Branch headwaters, critical to spawning Chum salmon. Why is the Yukon goverment back-tracking on its promises? We are mystified why the government would back away from a deal that was agreeable to all the parties concerned.
