Clip tips for copy editors By JOE GRIMM

Recruiting and development editor Copy editors, you have a tough, tough time showing clips of your work. Just as a good editor's hand is invisible to readers and sometimes the writers it is tough to show your work in a quick, clean way to an editor. But we didn't say impossible. First, go back and make sure that the other parts of your application package are clean as a whistle. In some ways, editors apply higher standards to the resumes and cover letter of copy editors than to those of other journalists. Go back and check them over. Every word, every piece of punctuation, even every space should be correct. Follow AP style. While you won't be expected to know the style of the newspaper to which you are applying, straying outside of standard style rules will raise questions. Copy editors basically do two or three things. They edit, they write headlines and some do pagination or design. The latter two skills are easier to demonstrate than the first. If you've done some design work, especially if it would be part of your new job, enclose some pages. Note what work you did on the page, whether it was total layout, headlines and editing, or just the design. Headlines give you a real opportunity to show off, and most of the copy editing applicants I've seen don't do this. Enclose a sheet of your best headlines. Julie Topping, director of copy desk operations at the Charlotte Observer, says "copy chiefs like headlines the way city editors like leads."

HOME WHAT'S NEW!! RECOMMENDATIONS Recommended Books ... HELP SUPPORT THIS SITE Welcome to Internet Homeworking Directory. PROOFREADING Each year, in excess of 100,000 books and journals are published in the U.K. Each of these will have started out as an author's manuscript complete with errors, inconsistencies and spelling mistakes which need to be removed. This takes the form of two processes, copy-editing and proofreading, both of which are very often carried out by freelance copy-editors and proofreaders from home. This is more cost effective for the publishers, given that the volume of work can be unevenly spread throughout the year, and will require specialists from differing fields. Like any other freelance work, check out any company if you are taking on a large quantity of work, as freelancers and other contractors are always the last to be paid in times of economic difficulty for a company, or for less scrupulous companies. A particularly high risk sector is vanity publishing (eg former company Minerva Press Ltd) Whilst no formal qualifications or previous experience are necessarily required, a good command of English, a systematic approach and an eye for detail are obviously necessary.

Writing That Works covers business publication writing. It is a paid subscription newsletter. Many subscribers work in corporate and nonprofit organization offices, while some are freelance communicators. Subscribers include professional editors, writers, publication managers, communication directors, editorial staff, PR and marketing staff, and managers and executives who write as part of their job but who may not have extensive publication responsibility. WTW is not about the "business" of succeeding as a freelance writer, or about getting published. It is not about fiction writing. It is about practical business and organizational writing and related editing and publishing. 2. Here's the best approach
    for Writing That Works articles.
  • Get right to the pointFAST. Avoid long warm-ups. On longer, 500 word articles use the DECK (the short blurb that follows the article main headline) to introduce and summarize the "meat" of the article. Subscribers should be able to get the gist of the article simply by reading the deck.
  • Use active voice. Use active verbs. Be BRIEF.

Quark Releases Authoring Tool for Writers, Editors

    (MacCentral)
    By Dennis Sellers
Monday, March 12, 2001 View More In: Print Product Pages: QuarkCopyDesk Ever wanted a tool that would allow you to get text into or out of a QuarkXPress or QuarkXPress Passport document? How about a tool that gives you professional control over your textual elements without the overhead of the full suite of design and production tools? If so, Quark says you'll like the just announced QuarkCopyDesk Special Edition, a stand-alone text processing and editing application designed to meet the needs of copy editors, copywriters, reporters, and researchers. You can purportedly use it to create any kind of text, from informal newsletters to books. With all the text-processing features of QuarkXPress, QuarkCopyDesk SE provides users with exact copy fitting information and typographic control, but without the overhead of graphic features, according to Glen Turpin of Quark. He added that the new app "integrates seamlessly" with QuarkXPress. Articles created in QuarkCopyDesk SE can be imported into QuarkXPress layouts, with exact hyphenation, justification, and line endings.
