Products by Group Woodwind Instruments Piccolos Flutes Clarinets ... Accessories Woodwind Instruments Woodwind refers to a group of instruments in which sound is produced by the vibration of reeds in the mouthpiece (such as with the clarinet, oboe or saxophone) or by the passing of air across the mouthpiece (such as with the flute.) Woodwind instruments have a long, thin column of air. The lowest note is played with all the tone holes closed, when the column is longest. The column is shortened by opening up holes successively, starting from the open end. At the other end, there is something that controls airflow — an air jet for the flute family and cane reeds for other woodwinds. The term woodwinds also refers to the section of a band or orchestra composed of woodwind instruments. Members of the woodwind family include the recorder, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, flute and piccolo. If you choose to play a woodwind instrument, you'll find there'll be opportunities to participate in a wide variety of musical venues including woodwind ensembles, wind bands, jazz bands, orchestras, concert bands and marching bands. Children as young as five can begin learning the flute, oboe and clarinet. Physical factors such as the size of the child's hands and the development of his or her teeth are important. Because the saxophone and bassoon are larger and heavier, it's usually best to have children start playing after age six. English horns and bassoons are also available through special order.

Woodwind Instruments
In the orchestras of Western art music, there are four main groups of instruments: strings, percussion, brass, and woodwinds. Woodwinds often play together with all the other instruments of the orchestra, but they also get to play solos in the orchestra, unlike most of the string players. Concert bands have woodwinds, brass, and percussion only, no strings.
Most woodwind instruments are tubes that are (or were long ago) made from wood, and players blow their "wind," or breath, into them to make sounds. Some woodwinds are conical, or cone-shaped—the tube starts small and gets bigger along the way to the end. Other woodwinds are cylindrical, or cylinder-shaped—the size of the tube stays about the same from one end to the other, like a paper-towel tube.
Woodwind instruments make sounds in different ways. Five families of instruments make up the woodwind section: flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon. Here is a look at each family and how its instruments produce sound.
The Flute Family
People have enjoyed playing the flute for at least 5,000 years. Most modern flutes are made of metal because metal helps them to sound louder in today’s big concert halls. Sound is produced on a flute the same way it is on a whistle. When the player’s breath hits the hole on the top of the mouthpiece of the flute, the air stream splits in two and makes a whistling sound. Flute players need to be able to hold a lot of air in their lungs. They also need to control the escape of all that air. This is called "breath control." It takes good breath control to play the flute.

The Story of Exotic Woods Co., Inc.
The company was founded by Gulab Gidwani, a mechanical
engineer by profession, in 1975 to provide musical instrument woods
to Gibson Co., which, at that time, was owned by Norlin Industries.
From such humble beginnings, we have grown over the years to
provide musical instrument woods to major manufacturers of stringed
instruments, woodwind instruments, pool cues and custom cabinetry. At present, we stock more than a million dollars in inventory, of approximately 50 different species of wood, at 2 locations in New Jersey, approximately 20 miles southeast of Philadelphia, PA. As we have our own vacuum kilns and de-humidification kiln, we are one of the very few companies in the world who provide kiln- dried Ebony. We also provide milling services such as re-sawing, dimensioning, planing, gluing, thickness sanding and dowelling.

Contact us... Welcome Follow the links via the navigation bar to your own instrument to find out about the kind of work I do, as well as tips on care of instruments and links to other related sites. In 1999 we moved to Devon, which involved the conversion of a blacksmiths forge into a workshop. Restoration work, particularly of instruments from the 18th & 19th centuries, is increasing all the time. These jobs I usually like to take plenty of time over. Sometimes there is no choice if I have to search for materials, but even then I tend to allow plenty of "thinking time" for each job. I also undertake custom work on all instruments, which includes the fitting of specialist thumbrests on clarinets, keywok extensions and other modifications to help people with injuries or disbalities to play an instrument. With an interest in both wind instruments and engineering, it seemed logical for me to study the making and repairing of them. To pursue this interest, I joined the most prestigious course in the UK, at Newark Technical College in 1986. From Newark I went to work full time in a specialist woodwind shop, setting up new instruments, repairing customers instruments and preparing used instruments for sale.

http://www.blackwoodconservation.org/music.html
If you have ever heard the mellow tones of a jazz or classical clarinet solo, you have been listening to the natural sound of an instrument made of mpingo. In the last century, cocuswood from the Caribbean region was the wood of choice for woodwinds, but the species was driven into economic extinction by that demand. African blackwood is now the wood used exclusively for fine quality woodwind instruments. Their manufacture demands a perfect piece of wood free of all defects to allow the intricate machining necessary to create such a complex instrument. To quote flutemaker Casey Burns , "African blackwood, which makes an excellent flute, is now the standard by which all other flute tonewoods are judged." Since blackwood is a tree that grows twisted and full of flaws, extracting high quality timber is extremely difficult. Graders at the mill reject up to 90% of the wood to the scrap pile. Additionally, instrument makers are finding that they lose up to 20% of their workpieces during the machining process at the factory. It is thought that this may be due to the exposure of mpingo to fires in excess of what would occur naturally during its growth. This may create hairline cracks and invisible defects in the wood that cause it to explode apart on the lathe during manufacture. Such large amounts of wastage put an added demand on the remaining stands of timber. African blackwood's exceptional stability under extremes of humidity and temperature is a necessary characteristic for instruments played by blowing air into them. Its density and fine grain structure allow it to be machined much as if it were metal. Its tight grain and oily nature allows it to be polished to a beautiful sheen. Not only does blackwood have no peers for this purpose, no suitable natural replacement is known. Composite materials made of blackwood dust and resins, as well as various plastic compounds have been used for the manufacture of woodwind instruments, but their acceptance among professional players is poor.

John Edfors WOODWIND
INSTRUMENTS
FROM PVC
Here are a host of techniques and solutions applicable to the challenging endeavor of building woodwind instruments from over-the-counter PVC plumbing products and other readily available materials. They originate from the author's workshop notes based on actual instruments he has made, historical artifacts created by him, hand sketches and CAD drawings. This work involves various types and sizes of flutes, both with and without keys. These are proven techniques which are very practical to the maker of conventional and experimental musical instruments. Chapters in this volume cover a wide variety of techniques used in the flute making process, shop requirements, work shop safety, designing the instrument, joint design, bending PVC pipe, tapered and enlarged bores, outside finish, drilling holes, press fits, hand shearing metals, fitting-up and regulating key mechanisms, marking and layout, tuning hints and an evaluation of different plastics for use in construction. Six sample projects are presented complete with diagrams and specifications. They include the Renaissance Flute in G, Bb Military Fife, Three-Way Instrument, Irish Flute, Native North American Indian Love Flute and the 4-Keyed Flute. Richly illustrated with drawing, photos and CAD layouts complete with specifications. Appendices provide a list of suppliers, description of common pipe materials and bibliography. New updated and expanded edition.
