Clemens, Samuel Frost, Robert Shakespeare - Oxford ... African-American Poetry
The database of "African American Poetry, 1760-1900" includes the poems of such well known figures, as Paul Laurence Dunbar and Phillis Wheatley and the verse of many lesser known poets whose works may only be found in anthologies or in private libraries. Most of the poets in the database were not acknowledged during their lifetimes, but only gained recognition posthumously. Covering a wide range of topics from slavery and abolition to love and death, this collection provides a unique portrait of early America through the reflections of African-American poets during the 18th and 19th centuries. It contains a rich variety of poetic styles and types incluing elegies, odes, ditties, hymns, and sonnets. The bibliographic source for the database of "African-American Poetry, 1760-1900" is the "Afro-American Poetry and Drama, 1760-1975" by W. P. French et al.

Reasons for Sex-Specific and Gender-Specific Study of Health Topics
Deborah Gesensway
From the Annals of Internal Medicine, 2001;135:935-938.
Physicians may soon need to consider as critical the sex of their patients when deciding which antidepressant or painkiller to prescribe, which angina treatment or heart attack intervention to order, or even how to urge someone to begin an exercise regimen. Sex and gender differences in health and medicine appear to be more pervasive than ever imagined. According to a report entitled "Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health: Does Sex Matter?" published this spring by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (http://www.nap.edu/books/0309072816/html/), biologists and medical researchers across disciplines now believe every organ in the body not just those related to reproduction has the capability to respond differently on the basis of sex. That proposal is based on an analysis of both old observations for example, that many more women than men are likely to develop an autoimmune disease or that men on average have heart attacks at a younger age than women and of new discoveries in microbiology and from the human genome project. Some scientists now conclude that cells from male and female organisms differ in ways that result from chromosomes, not hormones. In other words, a male skin cell is not the same as a female skin cell, although whether this basic distinction matters in terms of health, disease, and medicine is unknown. Because cells beyond those involved in reproduction have sex differences, scientists can now legitimately theorize about previously unsuspected sex differences in many diseases and conditions.

Finding Background Information English When you are doing research on literary topics, you will often encounter unfamiliar terms, or familiar ones used in specialized ways. DICTIONARIES can provide a quick definition and often some elaboration on the uses of the term. HANDBOOKS provide convenient guides to a particular subject or field of knowledge. ENCYCLOPEDIAS provide background information on unfamiliar subjects, leading you quickly to key ideas and sources in developing your topic. Many handbook entries and encyclopedia articles will also include brief bibliographies which will lead you to further sources of information. Some dictionaries, encyclopedias, and handbooks which may be of particular assistance to literary research include: Title Location Allusions - Cultural, Literary, Biblical, and Historical: A Thematic Dictionary. 2nd ed

Re: Ovarian Cancer
From: Geffrey H. Klein, MD anonymous@obgyn.net
Tue, 1 Jul 1997 23:05:26 -0500

The major modalities of ovarian cancer screening include pelvic examination, tumor markers, and transvaginal ultrasonography. The problem with ovarian cancer screening is that it is not sensitive in picking up the disease and it is not specific for ovarian cancer when abnormalities are detected. Ovarian cancer, unfortunately, is usually diagnosed in the advanced stages when cure rates are poor. This is a stressful situation for women, especially for patients like yourself who see the disease process first hand and are at increased risk by virtue of genetics. You might consider phoning a medical center near you that conducts cancer research to see if they have an experimental protocol for ovarian cancer screening. More bad news.. there appears to be a link between ovarian cancer risk and risk of other malignancies, specifically, colon, breast, and endometrial (lining of the uterus). You should have mammograms and testing for occult blood in the stool. Any abnormal uterine bleeding should be aggressively evaluated..
