It will hold meetings to consider ideas for such celebration, including a focal point for women's history in Washington, D.C., and the use of technology to connect existing and planned historical sites, museums and libraries. Welcome to The Gerritsen Collection - Women's History Online. In the late 1800s, Dutch physician Aletta Jacobs and her husband C.V. Gerritsen began collecting books and periodicals reflecting the evolution of a feminist consciousness and women's rights. By the time their successors finished their work in 1945, The Gerritsen Collection was the greatest single source for the study of women's history in the world, with materials spanning four centuries and fifteen languages. This online resource delivers two million page images exactly as they appeared in the original printed works. Users can trace the evolution of feminism within a single country, as well as the impact of one country's movement on those of the others. In many cases, it also provides easy access to primary sources otherwise available only in a few rare book rooms. For more information, click on About The Collection

In the meantime, due to our participation in the Tele-schools Project, Blackberry Bramble Network, we decided to publish, both in hard copy and online, the collections from 1990 to 1996. Copies are available for downloading and printing to schools and for other non-profit endeavours; and probably, printed/bound copies will be available for purchase. At this writing, the AAUW board is considering alternatives for the hardbound copies. And so for now, PLEASE, make free use of this material for schools and bring these talented, community serving women part of your curriculum.

Who Gave Their Lives in Service to Their Country. Huntsville's women soldiersof production are a permanent part of Redstone's installation history. Photo.
    http://www.redstone.army.mil/history/women/welcome.html
Redstone's WWII Female "Production Soldiers" Huntsville Times, 3 July 1941 The Ordnance Corps was attracted to the area by the presence of the Chemical Warfare Service installation. Recognizing the tremendous economy of locating a shell loading and assembly plant close to Huntsville Arsenal, on 8 July 1941 the War Department announced the establishment of a $6 million ordnance facility on a 4,000-acre tract east of and adjacent to the neighboring chemical munitions plant. It was hot and sultry in Huntsville on the morning of 25 October 1941, when MAJ Carroll D. Hudson walked to the center of a cotton field and turned over a shovelful of earth. This simple ceremony marked the beginning of construction of the Ordnance Corps' seventh manufacturing arsenal. Originally known as Redstone Ordnance Plant, the facility was redesignated Redstone Arsenal on 26 February 1943. During WWII Redstone Arsenal produced such items as burster charges, medium- and major-caliber chemical artillery ammunition, rifle grenades, demolition blocks, and bombs of varying weights and sizes. Between March 1942 and September 1945, over 45.2 million units of ammunition were loaded and assembled for shipment. The Army's impact on Huntsville was immediate and profound. But few, if any, of the town's citizens could have imagined what a change these installations and the war they were built to support would generate in the lives of the women living in Huntsville and the surrounding counties.

    International Women's Day
International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage. The idea of an International Women's Day first arose at the turn of the century, which in the industrialized world was a period of expansion and turbulence, booming population growth and radical ideologies. Following is a brief chronology of the most important events: In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate it on the last Sunday of that month through 1913.

Two people associated with the SF IMC have started a project to document anarchist history and culture as told by women in the movement. " Anarchists are more than a political movement. We are a culture. Our culture, like all cultures, is transmitted from generation to generation primarily by word of mouth. It is our theory that, for a variety of reasons, the primary role in this transmission is played by women. ... We decided to start with two of the Bay Area anarchist scene's most respected elders, Jean and Audrey. After working for 24 years at Modern Times Books, Jean retired, but in name only. She now volunteers at Bound Together Anarchist Collective Book Store. Audrey teaches at Walden School, where she was one of the founders. These are the kind of stories they tell.
