WIND ENERGY
Humans have harnessed the energy of the wind for over 2000 years. The first windmills were built in Persia and converted wind energy into mechanical power. Until the industrial revolution, windmills were used extensively to provide power for many purposes such as pumping water and grinding grain. Wind was second only to wood as a source of energy. As recently as the early 1900s, thousands of multi-bladed windmills were used on farms throughout Ontario and North America for pumping water. Many of these are still standing today, although few are actively used. The extension of transmission grids into rural areas and cheap electricity prices resulted in the replacement of wind pumps with electrically powered water pumps. Throughout this century, some remote areas not serviced by electricity grids have used small wind turbines to supply electricity, but the extent of these operations was very small. It was not until the "energy crisis" of the early 1970s, when oil prices skyrocketed, that anybody seriously considered the wind as an important source of energy for the future. Since the early 1970s new wind turbine designs have been developed which have transformed the wind into a clean, reliable and renewable source of electricity.
The Wind Resource
Winds are caused by differential heating of the earth's surface by the sun. The wind is indirect form of solar energy, and is therefore "renewable", that is, it is always being replenished by the sun. Every location on the planet experiences wind, but the absolute amount of wind in any one area is highly variable. In order to determine the magnitude of wind power available in a region, maps of average wind speeds must be developed. An example of a wind speed map is shown in Figure 1.

Wind turbines through history, from a Mediterranean mill to advanced designs. by Darrell M. Dodge Littleton , Colorado T he historical and technical information in this section is derived from many sources. Information on developments since 1975 is based primarily on my personal experience with the U.S. Federal Wind Energy Program, my extensive reading (and editing) of wind energy journals and research reports over the last twenty years, my conversations with wind energy researchers, interactions with members of the wind energy community, and my personal view of wind power developments and of the wind industry. Opinions expressed here are my own, of course. DMD

    The Case for Wind Power
F or human development to continue, we will ultimately need to find sources of renewable or virtually inexhaustible energy. It's difficult to imagine this, but even if we find several hundred or even thousand years of coal and natural gas supplies, what will humans do for the next 250,000 years or so after they are depleted? Even the most apparently "inexhaustible" sources like fusion involve the generation of large amounts of waste heat enough to place damaging stress on even a robust ecosystem like Earth's, at least for the organisms that depend upon stability of the system to survive.

    Replacing fossil fuels:
    the scale of the problem
Discussion Scale of the problem Variation of demand The storage problem ... Table: Fuel usage efficiency There are constant, ill-informed debates and reports that suggest that we can easily replace our fossil fuel usage by wind, or solar cell power, or some such method. Within current technology, this is a pipe-dream, it is impossible, it simply cannot be done. This does not mean that we are all dooooooooomed; but we are faced with a tremendous problem as reserves of fossil fuel, especially cheap pumpable oil, diminish. See World oil resources table for details.
There is a similar table for coal resources . As you will see, even with known coal resources, the current situation is not nearly as critical as it is for oil. This is probably an under-estimate of coal reserves, as the pressure to find new reserves has, so far, been considerably less than the pressures posed by oil depletion.
  • Fossil fuels are filthy.

Tiny utility is big on wind energy
Full size image available through contact The town of Waverly, Iowa, was built on the promise of power – power provided by a wooden dam built on the Cedar River in the early 1850s. By 1880, the town's power supply had grown to include an operating steam electric plant. During the next century, the town's municipal utility, Waverly Light and Power, grew, but so did demand for electricity. In 1991, the town faced an energy crisis and began looking for new power sources. WLP began investing in renewable energy by installing the first utility-scale wind turbine in Iowa. This program, which certain energy "experts" thought was not feasible, has helped lead the way for wind energy development across the Midwest and was awarded the 2002 Paul Rappaport Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Award. NREL inaugurated the national award this year in celebration of the Laboratory's 25th anniversary. It is named for the Lab's pioneering first director and honors outstanding efforts to advance renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. "Waverly Light and Power represents the very best of what the Rappaport Award is about," said NREL Director Richard Truly. "This may be a small utility, but it is one with a big supply of vision, innovation and courage."
