WYCINANKI: A MATH/ART LESSON IN SYMMETRY
    GRADES: 3-6
Wycinanki, Polish paper cut designs, are symmetrical.
    MATERIALS:
    • construction paper 12x18
    • scissors
    • glue
    • pencils
    • authentic examples or reproductions of Wycinanki
    METHOD:
  • Share with the students the following historical reference: Farming families in Poland in the early 19th century used brightly colored Wycinanki to decorate their homes before Easter. They show that intricate details can be created using basic materials. Wycinanki are cut with sheep shears with no preliminary sketching. Cut from folded paper, they are always symmetrical. Their subject matter reflects the Polish countryside and includes trees, flowers, roosters, birds, and sometimes men and women. There are many styles of Wycinanki found in the different regions of Poland.
  • Activity: After students have looked at examples and discussed the characteristics of Wycinanki, they will create their own paper cut designs. Each student will use a sheet of 12x18 paper. It should be folded in half lengthwise, and students will draw their designs first with pencil. They will then carefully cut out their designs. Completed pictures should be mounted on black paper (12x18).
  • Questions to ask during the lesson:
    • What things in our world are symmetrical?

    Recommended Grades:
    Intermediate Level (Grades 5-8). Objective:
Convert volcano elevation from feet to meters. Prerequisite Skill:
Multiply with whole numbers and decimals. Applicable National Math Standards:
    - Standard 6.3 (Extend understanding of whole number operations to decimals).
    - Standard 7.1 (Compute whole numbers, fractions, decimals, integers, and rational numbers).
    - Standard 13 (Develop formulas and procedures for determining measurements to solve problems). Instructional Delivery:
Whole Group, Cooperative Group, Flexible Group, or Independently Materials Needed:
Volcano Handout (calculators are optional) Activity Procedure:
  • It is recommended that the students review multiplication skills with whole numbers and decimals to introduce the length conversion formula. The teacher should determine instructional delivery, but should work the first problem as a whole group. The teacher should also determine the number of random problems the students should be given for practice. The following examples are randomly selected numbers and serve as examples only.

Teacher lesson plans Water Diary. Objective (Note in converting liters togallons, .25 was used for the convenience of staying with whole numbers.
    http://www.thursdaysclassroom.com/07dec00/TeaWaterDiary.html
    Teacher Lesson Plans
Water Diary Objective The student will review quantities of water commonly used for different activities. Older students will try to record and figure their water usage for a day. Younger students will try to estimate their water usage. Materials The students will need a copy of the activity sheet for older students or the activity sheet for younger students . Calculators and watches with second hands would be helpful. (Note: in converting liters to gallons, .25 was used for the convenience of staying with whole numbers. The actual conversion is .26) Estimated Time This lesson will take about one class period. Procedure 1. Ask students to guess what the average per capita use of water is. Write down their guesses. For older students, have them average the guesses. 2. Distribute the activity sheet. How far off was the average class guess? 3. As a class, read through the activity sheet. Discuss the different sections. 4. Make sure that the older students understand what they are to do. Younger students can tally guesses in each section and then use a calculator to add the guesses. 5. Compare the results to what is probably happening and not happening on the Space Station.

Drills are offered in Whole Number Addition, Addition with Decimals, Whole Number Subtraction, Subtraction with Decimals, Percent markup, Multiplication by 1-Digit Numbers, Multiplication by 20-Digit Numbers, Multiplying Decimal Numbers, and Rounding Decimal Numbers. It seems best to work the problems on paper and then enter the answer, which may feel awkward at first, but there is a good, detailed step-be-step explanation of the right answer offered when a student makes a mistake.
