Geography of Entrepreneurs
Exciting things are happening for entrepreneurs in West Virginia. That was the message of the first-ever West Virginia Conference on Entrepreneurship, held last week in the state capital of Charleston. Governor Bob Wise (D) kicked off the event with a rousing call to arms, and participants learned about the successes of home-grown companies and how they can do even better in the future. For example, Butterfly.net ( www.butterfly.net www.wvef.org ) with building local entrepreneurship networks that allow companies and their founders to share ideas and do business together. Information about the conference is available at www.wvef.org . Presentations and other materials from the event soon will be posted at this website. Entrepreneurial networks may be the coolest thing since Pokemon. Judging from a recent article in The Boston Globe Globe , former workers of these companies have organized thriving networks which enable participants to get head-starts on launching new firms, moving new ideas forward, or steering a company through its lean growth years. (The Digital alumni group, for example, contains more than 6,000 members.) According to an executive of a local firm that builds and maintains these kinds of networks, Boston is rich in "legacy companies" which have led to a number of related spin-off companies. Another expert on networks said many people laugh at the old notion that the Internet was going to lead solely to go-it-alone laptoppers in Montana. Instead, the

Students to participate in bird loss program
By Clint Thomas cthomas@cnpapers.com For all of the attention and repute West Virginia garners for its rural population and landscape, the Mountain State has one of the highest rates of urban sprawl in the United States. As urban sprawl increases, it can radically affect the habitats and, consequently, the survival of numerous species of indigenous wildlife. High school students from Kanawha, Putnam and Cabell counties will have the opportunity to participate in an environmental study to address the situation. Eighty high school students will join with the National Geographic Society, along with Marshall University and Concord College, to study the loss of bird habitats due to urban sprawl. The students will focus their efforts along the 60-mile stretch between Charleston and Huntington. They will perform their study with guidance from geographers, ecologists, teachers and planners.

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS: "Intelligent Mapping For All Situations"
What Is A Geographic Information System (GIS)? A GIS is an Information System applied to geographical or 'spatial' data
  • A System is a group of connected entities and activities which interact for a common purpose An Information System is a set of processes, executed on raw data, to produce information which will be useful in decision-making An Information System has full range of functions, including observation, measurement, description, explanation, forecasting, decision-making A Geographic Information System uses geographically referenced data as well as non-spatial data in a database and includes operations which support querying and spatial analysis The connection between the elements of the system is geography, e.g. location, addresses, proximity, connection, interaction - " a geographic footprint"

Geography Lesson Princeton men's basketball has literally gone from coast to coast. Jan. 9, 2003 When Princeton played in the Cable Car Classic between Christmas and New Year's, it marked a homecoming of sorts for the four Tigers from the state of California. That would be more than 25% of the current roster. In recent years, Princeton's roster has had a decidedly Californian flair to it. Beginning with the Class of 2000, Princeton has had 32% (six of 19) of its players who have either lettered as seniors or are still on the team come from the Golden State. That trend is set for the near future, as two of the four members of the incoming Class of 2007 are from California. Of all the trends in Princeton basketball in the last 30 years, perhaps the most interesting and least talked about is not the shot clock, the three-pointer or the up-tempoing of the offense. It's geography.

National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis
The NSF's funding has helped establish and maintain U.S. leadership in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), especially through the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) , an NSF center at the University of California- Santa Barbara, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the University of Maine-Orono. NCGIA's research has been a catalyst for the refinement of this powerful analytic tool. GIS is now being applied extensively in the private sector for market analysis and facility site selection. GIS improves the delivery and reduces the costs of providing emergency responses and fire and police protection. GIS is now a $3 billion industry that is expected to double in size by the year 2000. Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network
NSF funding has also aided in the development of the Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
