    Overview of Competitions
The Fed Challenge is an academic competition designed to expand the community's understanding of the Federal Reserve System's unique role in the economy and the importance of Federal Open Market Committee decisions. This endeavor also promotes the study of economics as a possible future career choice. Further, the competition is framed to assist in the development of students' research, group dynamics, presentation, and critical thinking skills. The competition calls for five-member teams, to undertake research, analyze data about current and near-term economic conditions, and decide on and recommend a specific course for monetary policy by deciding whether to raise, lower or maintain interest rates. The student teams will make fifteen-minute (High School Fed Challenge) or twenty-minute (College Fed Challenge) presentations, based on their findings, (or in the case of the High School competition, their classes' findings) before a panel of judges at a mock meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, the Federal Reserve's monetary policy arm. The student teams must also be prepared to answer a variety of questions from the judges about both their research and general Federal Reserve information.

Our "West Virginia Birds of Prey" presentation is fairly general in scope, custom-tailored to the ages and needs of our audiences. Each presentation includes 4-7 live birds of prey from TRAC, and the individual case history of each raptor is discussed. Program topics included vary as to their emphasis, but all presentations discuss the following:
    • habitat and the role of raptors in the ecosystem
    • why we have laws protecting raptors and other wild birds
    • a discussion of the most common hazards they face daily
    • the work we do at TRAC to return threatened wild birds to their native habitats.
    • Question and answer sessions are an important part of our presentations
    • A 6' by 3' hands-on display of raptor feathers.
Program length is flexible; normally it runs from 45 minutes to one hour, although we have done both shorter and longer programs.
