HOME NEWS GET INVOLVED ABOUT US
Affiliate Prepares to Celebrate Jubilee 2003!
In an effort to get more community churches involved with Habitat, Huntington Area Habitat has begun its Jubilee 2003 Campaign, encouraging churches to get involved in the construction of its 50th house to be built in the late fall of 2003. Nearly 70 churches with small to mid-size congregations and other larger churches who have never been involved with the work of Habitat have been asked to make a commitment of $500 toward purchase of building materials, and provide five volunteers for a half-day commitment to work on-site once construction begins. The affiliate hopes that at least 50 churches will make that commitment for the 50th house to be built by the affiliate. The 50 participating churches would generate $25,000 to cover most of the $36,000 it costs to build a 3-bedroom house. The affiliate will raise the additional $10,000 through fundraising projects. Started in late September, the campaign has generated a commitment of 18 churches to date. The affiliate’s board members will continue making contact with each of the 70 churches over the next several months, offering whatever help or assistance each church may need in order to become involved with Jubilee 2003. Anyone interested in more information about Jubilee 2003 is welcome to call the Habitat office at 523-4822.

Back to list of current disasters
West Virginia/Virginia Floods Full Report Short Report May 8, 2002 Dear friends in Christ, Last year, Bishop Ralph Dunkin (ELCA West Virginia-Western Maryland Synod) was reflecting on July 2001 floods that had devastated major areas of West Virginia and Virginia. "The need is very real, and it will not go away quickly," he said. "As with most disasters, they strike the poor the hardest. Your prayers and gifts are definitely needed." Last week, on May 2, five inches of rain in less than one hour poured down in the same areas. Devastating floodwaters again have passed through portions of McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, and Wyoming counties in West Virginia, and though Buchanan and Tazewell counties in southwest Virginia. In some places there was greater destruction than last year. The American Red Cross reports "at least six people were killed, 10 remain missing, and some 2,300 homes were damaged." Once again, this is not a "Lutheran" disaster. Few Lutherans were directly affected. Once again, it is a "poor person's" disaster.

United Methodists respond to West Virginia flood damage July 12, 2001 News media contact: Linda Bloom New York By Tom Burger* CHARLESTON, W. Va. (UMNS) Hundreds of southern West Virginia families are looking for places to live after the devastating flood July 8. Many more must also find other churches in which to worship. Rushing water inflicted major damage on four United Methodist churches and left mud and debris in seven others in the flood area. The governor declared a state of emergency in eight counties, and hundreds of people were forced to evacuate their homes. The flooding is known to have caused at least one death. The Rev. Paul Russell, Southern District superintendent, said he had never seen flood damage so bad. "The main problem has been getting help across crumbling, inundated roads to begin cleanup," he said. Mullens United Methodist Church still has six inches of mud in it because work teams have not been able to get there, Russell said. The other hard-hit churches were Matheny, Long Branch and Milam United Methodist churches in Wyoming and Fayette counties. Anawalt, Delilah, Pageton, Prosperity, Premier, Superior and Hemphill churches were also damaged.

Grafton, west virginia.Category Society Religion and Spirituality west virginia...... Council of churches. In our local church we are associated with thewest virginia Council of churches in its ministry to our state.
    http://www.iolinc.net/fccg/

Greetings from the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 109 McGraw Ave. in Grafton, WV 26354. We are located in the North Central part of West Virginia on US Rt. 119 south one mile from its intersection with US Rt 50 . WHAT IS THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST)? The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) started on the frontier of the United States immediately following the Revolutionary War. In 1803 a group of ministers, led by Barton W. Stone (a Presbyterian Minister) came together in Kentucky. After studying the New Testament together, they decided that the teachings of Jesus Christ could only be fulfilled in a spirit of Christian Unity. A few years later in 1809, Thomas and Alexander Campbell, were ministers of the Presbytery of Washington County, Pennsylvania. They too, after studying the New Testament thought that the only way for the church to fulfill the ministry of Jesus Christ was to come together in unity. They separated from the Presbyterian Church and began churches with those who shared their vision of a united church based upon the teachings of the New Testament. In 1839 the group founded in Kentucky (The Christians) and the group founded in Virginia, Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio (The Disciples of Christ) united together as a Brotherhood of Christian Churches and Churches of Christ. In 1968 the church was reorganized and established as a denomination with Regional and International representative Churches known as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
