63. Southeast Wyoming Skywarn - Cheyenne Area Severe Weather History -October 1997 B
Douglas/Casper, 36 . Written by Don Moore - NWS Cheyenne. Special thanks to theCheyenne National Weather Service for allowing us to use their presentation.
http://wy.skywarn.net/snwstm.htm
OVERVIEW OF THE OCT 23 - 25, 1997 BLIZZARD
Pictures of the event, and even more pictures
A major early season snow storm occurred over Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle from the evening of October 23rd through the morning on October 25. The culprit was an upper level trough of low pressure which dove south into Idaho on the 23 rd , developed into a strong area of low pressure that evening, then moved into Colorado. As the low developed over Idaho, deep moisture spread north into Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle. This resulted in widespread precipitation over the region. The bulk of the moisture was split into two main plumes overnight on the 23 rd ; one remained over western Wyoming while the second developed over the Nebraska panhandle (figure 1) . The heaviest rain and snow fell over these areas. The precipitation began as rain over the lower elevations of Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle, but changed to snow that night as temperatures dropped. Meanwhile, all of the precipitation in the mountains fell as snow.
The plume of moisture over western Wyoming resulted in heavy snow, especially in the mountains. Six to ten inches fell overnight in the mountains of western Wyoming with two to five inches at the lower elevations. In the Nebraska panhandle, the precipitation initially fell as a moderate to heavy rain. However, as the temperature dropped that night, the rain changed to a heavy wet snow in southwestern sections of the Nebraska panhandle. By sunrise, residents in Kimball, and Harrisburg received four to eight inches of snow. The snow was so heavy it caused numerous trees to snap and downed power lines. In fact, half of Kimball lost their power by morning.

http://www.continuity-booth.co.uk/bbcweather3.html
BBCTV Weather History by Paul R Jackson A British Obsession Some viewers tune in to the BBC every day for one thing - the weather forecast. They want to see if the weather presenter can get the forecast right and to hear if they will be able to put the washing out or go on their planned day trip. Some viewers tune in purely to see what jumper Michael Fish is wearing or if Bill Giles might end the forecast with his customary wink to camera. BBC weather presenters are employed by the Meteorological Office, which is part of the Ministry of Defence, and are paid an allowance for broadcasting although they can supplement this through regular guest appearances on panel and quiz programmes and with after-dinner speaking engagements. They are chosen for their friendly manner and their ability to relay highly technical information in a way the public can easily understand. Weather presenters in Britain, like their counterparts in other parts of the world, most notably America, have become household names over the past forty years through their daily appearances on television.

NOAA RETRACES INAUGURATION DAY WEATHER HISTORY
Will Inauguration Day 2001 be as cold as the record low 7 degrees that chilled Ronald Reagan as he took the oath for his second term? Or will it be as cold and windy as in 1841 when William Henry Harrison tragically caught a cold and died just one month later? From turmoil to tragedy, get all of the Presidential Inauguration Day weather facts at a new Web site from NOAA's National Weather Service at: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/er/lwx/Historic_Events (Click on Inauguration Weather.) "With the eyes of the nation focused on the upcoming Inauguration, thoughts naturally turn to the weather," said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Jack Kelly, director of NOAA's National Weather Service . "Thankfully, we are not expecting a repeat of President Reagan's second-term Inauguration or President Taft's 1909 Inauguration, which was forced indoors by 10 inches of snow," Kelly said. * A cooling degree day is a standard index established by the federal government and is the number of degrees the average temperature for the day is above 65 degrees. For example, if the daily high is 87 and the low is 47, the average temperature for the day is 67 and counts as 2 cooling degree days. Likewise a average temperature of 63 would count as 2 heating degree days. The more degree days there are the more energy is required for heating and cooling. **January 2003 was the warmest January on record
