Key Words: Lizards - Sailfin Dragons - Hydrosaurus sp. -CITES-Regulation
PROPOSAL
To consider members of the genus Hydrosaurus for inclusion in Appendix II in accordance with Article II 2.(a). To consider members of the genus Hypsilurus and the species Physignathus lesueurii for inclusion in Appendix II in accordance with Article II 2.(b).
Supporting Statement
2. Biological Parameters
2.1 Distribution:
Physignathus lesueurii is found in a variety of habitats in eastern Australia. A single specimen, apparently collected in the Arfak Mountains of Irian Jaya, indicates the possibility of an isolated population on the island of New Guinea. This population is highly suspicious and current investigation of its existance in reality is likely to reveal that the population does not exist (Johnston, pers. comm. and Moody, pers comm.).
Most species of Hypsilurus are found primarily in forest habitat on the island of New Guinea. Three species reach as far west as the Aru Islands and Batanta, where they occur sympatrically with Hydrosaurus amboinensis.
2.2 Habitat availability:

ANU SRES KIOLOA ANIMALS ... REFERENCES Lizards Lizards are reptiles of the suborder Lacertilia (or Sauria), esp those of the family Lacertidae (Old World lizards). Most of them have an elongated body, four limbs, and a long tail: including geckos, iguanas, chameleons, monitors, and slow worms.
They are Ordered in the following Families:

Geckos are small insectivorous terrestrial lizards of the family Gekkonidae which only live in warm regions.
The digits have adhesive pads, which enable these animals to climb on smooth surfaces. Their eyes are covered by a transperent spectacle, which is shed with the skin and have not moveable eyelids. Snake Lizards are closely allied to the geckos without forelimbs and their hindlimbs are not obvious or normal, but represented by a scaly flap just above the vent. Dragon Lizards are large lizards, esp the Komodo dragon, most with tubercles and spines on their body.
