The Library of Congress George Washington: First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of His Countrymen Overview Objectives Lessons Acknowledgements Unit Overview George Washington: First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of His Countrymen consists of three lessons examining George Washington's leadership in the French and Indian War, at the Federal Convention, and as chief executive. They are based on primary source documents from George Washington Papers, 1741-1799 . The lessons are intended for secondary students, grades 8-12. The documents from Washington's Letterbooks include focus questions that may be used in Socratic seminars, cooperative learning, individual and group work. In preparation, teachers should review the on line documents and suggested readings accompanying each lesson to determine appropriateness for their students. Recognizing that eighteenth-century conventions of grammar, vocabulary, and spelling may be distracting, teachers may choose to read selected documents aloud, and/or use vocabulary building activities before reading. The bicentennial of Washington's death in 1999 is an appropriate time to reflect upon his role and place in the school curriculum. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE "GREAT PERSON" IN HISTORY By what criteria should educators decide to emphasize a person in history? Extraordinary goodness or virtue should not be the sole standard (Patrick 1992, 12-13). Instead, the touchstone for inclusion should be whether an individual's achievements have significantly shaped events in his or her country or the world. By this criterion, George Washington merits strong emphasis in the school curriculum. You could also discuss how DDESS schools were created with military dependents in mind and cater to their unique needs.

Eakman Generally I concur with pro-lifers, but like the ubiquitous American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), they missed the mark on the issue of dismissing pregnant cadets at Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Military academies, be it VMI, the Citadel, or West Point, exist for only one reason: to build an honorable, dedicated, and competent fighting force that will put the defense of our country first. This means the criteria for success are going to be different. It means students will be held to a higher standard. It means following rules, many of them arbitrary. It implies stipulations that would be challenged under different circumstances. Strict rules are part of the learning process at military schools. If cadets are overly sensitive, if they cannot control their impulses, cannot abide by the decisions of their superiors, subordinating their personal wants to the needs of the country at least for a finite period of time, then maybe they aren't cut out for a military career. Better to find out sooner than later, when people's lives are on the line. Prospective cadets know when they apply to VMI and similar institutions that the priorities are going to be different. Strictures against fraternization, and other constraints not applicable to a civilian setting, exist for a reason. The decision to dismiss pregnant students at VMI, as well as their partners, if discovered, is not about undermining families or encouraging abortions. It's about obedience, dependability. It's about the capability to go into dangerous situations that military personnel often must face. Most importantly, it's about propriety. Not everyone is suited to a highly disciplined lifestyle indeed most are not. But if one is attracted to military service as a career choice, then it is necessary to have a highly developed sense of propriety a virtue that gets short shrift today. For a career officer, there is a time and a place for courtship and family, and status as a student in a military academy or as a conscript in a bootcamp aren't it.

So at this year's parents night at his son's Fairfax County high school, Schmitt was dismayed to see a new form in the usual stack of permission slips and reminders. This one invited him to sign if he wanted his son's name, address and telephone number withheld from the Pentagon. Otherwise, the information would be included in a directory of the school's juniors and seniors that will be given upon request to military recruiters. Schmitt signed the form quickly. "Most people probably missed [the form], and it'll probably be too late," Schmitt said. "There is a commodity with your consumer history. With the military, the commodity happens to be your children's information. . . . Once there's a point of entry, you don't know where the information is going to go."
