    http://www.projecte.org/charter_schools.asp
Charter Schools On Wednesday, May 2, 2001, Indiana adopted the 38th charter school law in the country. Indiana’s new law has already been given an "A" by the Center for Education Reform, a national education reform organization that rates charter school laws. CER also judged Indiana’s law as the 7th strongest among 38 laws in the country. Indiana’s new charter school law allows not-for-profit entities to form new public schools that operate under a contract, or charter. Charter schools are public because they operate with traditional sources of public school funding, they are to open to all students and they are responsible to a public entity that serves as their sponsor. Charter schools encourage innovation through deregulation and operational autonomy. In exchange for that freedom, they are held to higher degrees of accountability through a performance contract and by virtue of parental choice. The signing of the charter school law marks the beginning of a newer and bigger challenge as teachers and parents from around the state begin the process of developing charter school proposals. To learn more about the possibilities that a charter school can bring to your area, visit the Indiana Charter Schools Network and Resource Center:
