Examining the Gulf War through the eyes and in the words of those who played major roles
General Norman Schwarzkopf (Commander-in-Chief, Central Command (CENTCOM)) Q: The first night of the war. Can you recall your entry into the war room that night?
Schwarzkopf:
In the days preceding, we tried to keep it a very very deep secret, exactly when these attacks would be launched...
General Calvin Waller (Deputy Commander, CENTCOM) Q: Buster Glosson says that if he could have carried on hitting the strategic targets, Saddam would have waved the white flag...
Waller:
Anyone who says if they had been allowed just a few more days of strategic bombing that there wouldn't have been a need for a ground attack, I think is absolutely smoking something...
General Charles Horner (Commander, US Ninth Air Force) Q: How did you come to decide to start to hit the biological warfare targets?
Horner:
One of the thorniest problems in targeting was biological warfare storage areas - we knew they were storing anthrax and botulism...
General Walt Boomer (Marine Air-Ground Commander) Q: What did the battle at Khafji tell you about the Iraqis?

IRAQ SINCE THE GULF WAR Monday, November 23, 1998 10:00 AM 11:00 AM United States Institute of Peace
1200 17th Street, NW
2nd Floor Conference Room On November 23, 1998 former National Security Advisor Lieutenant General Brent Scowcroft (Ret.) spoke to a public gathering at an Institute Current Issues Briefing, and discussed the challenge of the Iraqi leadership and its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) activities to U.S. foreign policy. General Scowcroft reviewed existing U.S. policy and goals, which include both UN economic sanctions and support for United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) An audience member poses a
question to General Scowcroft
Where Scowcroft took issue with the administration's current stance was on the question of what it will take for the U.S. to now respond to Iraqi misbehavior. "The U.S. has indicated its willingness to act if Saddam violated the agreement, but left unclear what would constitute a violation. What would he have to do to violate the agreement? What is a triggering event? This is difficult to decide. For example, what if he refuses to turn over documents? Refuses an inspection at one site? Delays for 24 or 48 hours? He could do a lot of damage without ever having done something we all could agree was a violation serious enough to justify use of force."

Kuwaiti Ambassador Speaks at Institute
The Kuwaiti Ambassador in Washington, Dr. Mohammed Al-Sabah, argued that a strengthened regime of economic sanctions that are "regime lethal" represent the best strategy to confront Saddam Hussein. The ambassador made his remarks at a public event attended by some fifty journalists and policy experts at USIP's offices on December 4. Ambassador Al-Sabah began his discussion by outlining the ways in which Saddam Hussein is a menace: to his own people, to his neighbors, to security in the Persian Gulf, and to the credibility of the international system. He then outlined the five basic options available to the international community. The first, maintaining the status quo, Al-Sabah rejected as unacceptable and unsustainable. The second, known as "containment-plus," would involve a less intrusive weapons monitoring regime but a clear and vigorous use of force in the event of Iraqi transgressions. Al-Sabah argued that "containment-plus," though initially attractive, is unsustainable in the long term. Al-Sabah viewed the third option, support for the Iraqi opposition, as impractical. The opposition is currently fragmented, weak and dispersed, he said, and a serious program of support would require vast amounts of cash and regional support which are currently lacking. Finally, the opposition has been thoroughly infiltrated by Iraqi intelligence organizations.

WAR (0. Eng. werre, Fr. guerre, of Teutonic origin; cf. O.H.G. werran, to confound), the armed conflict of states, in which each seeks to impose its will upon the other by force. War is the opposite of Peace (q.v.), and is the subject of the military art. In separate sections below the general principles of the art of war are discussed, and the laws which have gradually become accepted among civilized peoples for the regulation of its conditions. The details concerning the history of individual wars, and the various weapons and instruments of war, are given in separate articles. See ARMY, NAVY, CONSCRIPTION, STRATEGY, TACTICS, INFANTRY, CAVALRY
The important wars are dealt with under the names commonly given to them; e.g. AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE, AMERICAN WAR OF 1812, CRIMEAN WAR , DUTCH WARS, FRANCO-GERMAN WAR, FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY WARS , GREAT REBELLION, GREEK WAR OF INDEPENDENCE, ITALIAN WARS, NAPOLEONIC CAMPAIGNS,

Colorado's Role in the US Civil War General Henry Sibly

The main threat to the West would become El Paso (Franklin) at Fort Bliss. The Confederates were assembling a garrison of Texans (about 3500). They were under General Henry Sibly. He pushed the plans to head west.
Left: General Henry Sibly wearing the Confederate uniform, after leaving the Union Army.
Right: How a tipi was constructed. Click the tipi for a more detailed diagram. Before the war, he created the Sibly Tent - a pointed tent. (He stole his idea from the Indians.) He also created the Sibly stove.
Sibly was placed in command because he was familiar with the territory. He had 3000-3500 Texans assembled and threatening the Union. In early 1862, they started marching north, went up to Arizona and took over Tucson. The majority marched up the Rio Grande working ultimately toward Colorado. Fort Craig / Fort Throne
Canby (Union) called all Union troops south of Fort Craig to come to Fort Craig where he had set up his headquarters. They would assemble there to take on the Texans. The troops were worried about the Sutlers store supplies. (I.e. whiskey!)

A Brief Biography
of
GENERAL PHILIP HENRY SHERIDAN
John and Mary Minah Sheridan, Philip's parents, came to America in 1830 at the urging of John's uncle, Thomas Gainor, living in Albany, New York. John and Mary were second degree cousins from County Cavan, Ireland. Before leaving Ireland the couple had two children, Patrick H. and Rosa. Rosa died aboard ship and was buried at sea. Philip Henry was born March 6, 1831. His birthplace is still a mystery. There are no records available at Albany, New York, Boston, Mass. (where their ship landed), nor at Somerset, Ohio. Phil at various times claimed all three places. He arrived with his parents in Somerset as a babe-in-arms and spent his childhood here. The Sheridan family increased here by the births of Mary, Michael, and John L. Sheridan attended school in Somerset until the age of fourteen, at which time he went to work for various businessmen, notably Fink and Dittoe. In 1848 Congressman Thomas Ritchie, who knew both Phil and his father, obtained an appointment to West Point for Phil. In 1851, his third year at the Point, he was suspended for a year for fighting with a fellow cadet, William Terrill, Va. Brig. Gen., Union. Phil graduated 34th in a class of 52 in July, 1853, and was assigned to the 1st Infantry at Fort Duncan, Texas, as a 2nd Lt. In 1855 he was transferred to the 4th Infantry in the Pacific Northwest. In April, 1856, he was assigned to duty at the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation in Yamhill County, Oregon, and was promoted to 1st Lt.

Whether soldiers or innocent civilians, the casualties of war leave behind them children and parents, brothers, sisters and lovers. In the cold aftermath of calculated killing, humanity often regains a foothold, and reuniting the dead with their survivors becomes the next mission. Among our latest additions to TheHistoryNet is the story of one such mission, and mystery, that began at a place called Gettysburg.
