DESCRIPTION:

The University of Vermont has one of the largest Geography departments in New England, also one of the few graduate schools of geography in the region. The Department of Geography was established in 1966 and currently has eight faculty and forty-five undergraduate majors. The first Master's degrees were conferred in 1970 and typically there are eight to ten graduate students enrolled.
Undergraduate students who take Geography at UVM can choose from a wide range of courses, many of which will take them around the world. For example, students could sign up for regional geography courses on Canada, Vermont, Africa, or the USA. Other introductory offerings include courses on the geography of race and ethnicity, "geotechniques," and our ever-popular introductory classes in world regional geography and world natural environments. Intermediate-level classes include political geography, cultural ecology, geography and gender, international development and political ecology, urban geography, and intermediate courses in GIS and remote sensing. At the advanced level, we offer classes that include spatial analysis, research methods, climate and hazards, and global economic restructuring.
Specialized facilities for the study of geography at UVM include remote sensing/GIS and cartography labs in the department. The University has an excellent library with over one million books and periodicals. The library also contains a collection of about 150,000 maps and atlases as well as being a regional depository for government documents. The commitment to an Area Studies focus in our department is strengthened by close ties to the International Studies and Canadian Studies Programs at UVM. Similarly, we regularly cross-list courses and work in concert with a number of other departments at UVM, including the Environmental Program, Women's Studies, Political Science, Geology, Anthropology, and Natural Resources.

Barre Lyndonville St Albans White River Junction ... West Dover VERMONT - Geography It is bordered by New Hampshire, across the Connecticut R. (E), Massachusetts (S), New York, with Lake Champlain forming almost half the border (W), and the Canadian province of Quebec (N). The rivers of Vermont (the only completely inland state of New England) flow either into the Connecticut River or into Lake Champlain. The Winooski rises east of the Green Mts. and cuts directly through them to Lake Champlain. Grand Isle county, comprising several islands and a peninsula jutting down into Lake Champlain from Canada, is connected to Vermont proper by causeways. Vermont has a short summer and a humid, continental climate, with abundant rainfall and a growing season that varies from 120 days in the Connecticut valley to 150 in the Lake Champlain region. Winter brings heavy snows, which usually cover the ground for at least three full months, but because the state's good roads are almost always kept clear, this season no longer forces complete isolation on rural communities. With its rugged terrain, much of it still heavily wooded, Vermont has limited areas of arable land, but the state is well suited to grazing (the Justin Morgan breed of horses was developed there).
