Shelburne Community School's Vermont Geography Bee team - Kyle Rosenblad, Sean Maille, Max Keve, John William Meyer, Chris Page and Josh Phillips - won the District competition hosted by Charlotte on Tuesday, March 27, with the following results: Shelburne 122; Charlotte 104, Hinesburg 82 and Williston 56. David Southworth and Jeff Hindes are the team's coaches. Continued Sunday Caravan will trace LaPlatte to its hillside Source Bibs Francis of Shelburne, and her Rhodesian Ridgeback Hobie, stand above the trickle that is the beginning of the LaPlatte River. On Sunday they will lead a caravan to trace the river from Shelburne Bay to its source. "It's a delightful place and it simply felt great to be there," she said.
The LaPlatte River is important to us because it gathers rain water and ground water and flows into Shelburne Bay, which is the source of water for the Champlain Water District, which in turn supplies water to the Shelburne Water Department and other surrounding towns. The river is important to us because it feeds the Shelburne Bay ecology helping to determine what lives and what dies. The LaPlatte watershed is by far the largest watershed depositing water into Shelburne Bay. The others are smaller brooks which flow into the bay. In its travel through our towns of Hinesburg, Charlotte, and Shelburne the LaPlatte brings life to plants and animals and recreation to the citizenry.
