FIFA congress: Host: Qualifiers: Participants: Winner: Brasil 25 teams 13 teams Uruguay The first World Cup after the war was played in Brasil in 1950. European teams from countries most affected by World War II (among others the Polish team) didn't enter the qualifiers. The silver medallists of the previous championships, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Argentina didn't participate either. For the first time teams from England and Scotland entered the competition and Uruguay, the world champion of 1930, entered after 20 years of absence. Eventually 13 out of 16 entered teams played in the tournament, after India, Scotland and Turkey had withdrawn from the competition after the draw. Under these circumstances, FIFA invited France and Portugal to play, but both countries rejected the offer.

FIFA was concerned, though, with the altitudes, (reaching up to 2,680 meters above sea level) on which the games were to be played. 70 teams entered the competition, among the ones that didn't make it through the qualifiers was Portugal (bronze medallist of 1966), Yugoslavia (European champion), Hungary (Olympic champion), and Argentina. For the first time Israel, Morocco and El Salvador qualified. Top players of the tournament: Alberto, Gérson, Jarzinho, Pelé, Rivelino (Brasil), R. Charlton, Moore (England), Facchetti, Riva (Italy), Beckenbauer, G. Müller, Overath, Seeler (West Germany), Mazurkiewicz (Uruguay).

    DESTINATION URUGUAY
Uruguay may be pint-sized but it's certainly big-hearted when it comes to attractions. It contains one of South America's most interesting capitals, charming colonial towns and a cluster of internationally renowned beach resorts.

    History
Uruguay's fragile independence was repeatedly threatened during the 19th century - militarily by Argentina and Brazil, and economically by Britain. Federalist forces in collusion with Argentina besieged Montevideo from 1838-51 and helped create two warring political parties, the Blancos and the Colorados. Around the same time, the British introduced new wool, meat and rail industries. They also replaced the rangy criollo stock with their own cattle, thus commercializing one of the country's few abundant resources. For the remainder of the century, the contest between the Blancos and Colorados continued, immersing the country in civil war, dictatorship and political intrigue. The country's former prosperity had ebbed away by the 1960s as state-supported enterprises became riddled with corruption. The country slid into dictatorship and was thrown into turmoil by the Tupamaros, an urban guerrilla movement which appeared publicly in 1967. In 1971, the military was invited to participate in government, Congress was dissolved, and the Tupamaros were effectively wiped out.

    http://www.mapzones.com/world/south_america/uruguay/cultureindex.php
Country Info Uruguay Introduction Uruguay General Data Uruguay Maps Uruguay Culture ... Uruguay Time and Date Uruguay Culture Back to Top Western European tradition is widespread in Uruguay today. By the 19th century most of the Native Americans had been supplanted by Europeans, chiefly Spaniards and Italians. Since then the country has adopted the cultural institutions of these immigrants. As in Argentina, which has folk music and dances similar to those of Uruguay, the gaucho (South American cowboy) has been the subject of folklore and music. Uruguayan culture reflects some of the same characteristics as are found in neighbouring Argentina. Both countries are strongly European in their orientation and, unlike many South American countries, Uruguay is minimally influenced by the original Indian inhabitants. The tradition of the gaucho has been an important element in the art and folklore of both countries. Uruguay's theatre and music have not been the province of a small elite, as in Bolivia and Peru and some other Latin-American nations, but rather are broadly based in terms of support and participation. The Italian influence in language and customs is also shared by Uruguay and Argentina. Colonial literature was largely limited to science, education, and religion. Uruguay's first noteworthy writer to use gaucho themes was 18th-century poet Bartolomé Hidalgo. Although not a gaucho himself, he was one of the first poets to introduce the colorful language of rural folk into poetry. Juan Zorrilla de San Martín wrote Tabaré (1886; translated 1956), considered one of the genuine epic poems of America. Tabaré describes the clash between Spanish settlers and indigenous people in Uruguay that ended in the destruction of the indigenous culture.
