Then, one week ago, an Associated Press story datelined London ran on the front pages of sports sections of the New York Times , the Los Angeles Times, USA Today and around the country with ominous headlines: "Triathlon's Olympic status in jeopardy." In the AP article, IOC officials stated they were concerned about "infighting" that has plagued the sport and expressed dissatisfaction that the ITU had failed to respond to two letters from the IOC asking to explain and respond to the accusations made by dissatisfied factions in Europe, Canada and Latin America. IOC director general Francois Carrard was quoted by the AP as saying: "These personal quarrels damage the credibility of the sport and the athletes." Triathlon as we know it in America got its start in San Diego, California in September 1974, four years before the famed Ironman saw its birth in Hawaii, and 53 years after the first known actual swim, bike, run event. This first known Triathlon event was held on September 4, 1921 in Marseilles, France. The Petit Perillon swim club held they race and called it " Course Des Trois Sports." This translates to "The Race of Three Sports." The race consisted of a bicycle leg of about 7K (4.2 miles), a run of 5K (3.1 miles), and finished with a 200 meter swim. This first actual Triathlon was won by Lulu Helmet. The founders of the sport, Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan had never put on a race before the inaugural event. The first official triathlon to take place in Bermuda was held in 1979 and was a far cry from the hi-tech sophisticated events that take place today. Jim Butterfield, who has been integral to Bermuda triathlons, organised this first event which took place in and around Harrington Sound. Things were a little different back then. For one thing, the order of events consisted of a 1,000 yard triangular swim, followed by a 7.1 mile run around Harrington Sound and a 14.2 mile (two-lap) cycle to round off the race. The ten men and five women who lined up for the start were pioneers of sorts. Some of them were inspired by the challenge, others never competed again! Jim Butterfield had given up his chance to compete in 1979 as he was busy coordinating the event, but others such as Bob Oliver, Midge Oliver, Linda Dillon and Marianne Herbert are still competing today. (Watch for Linda Dillon in Hawaii Ironman 2000) Those who did compete were only aware of the upcoming event a few weeks in advance so training was limited. All of the individual competitors, with the exception of winner Richard Goodwin, who was a leading Island cyclist, were basically runners. It has been too long coming and, for me, a twenty plus year wait. My first experience with the triathlon was as a competitor in a "sprint" race. In that case it was a 200 meter swim, 10 mile bike and a 5k run. Later, I was to direct two more competitions at the same distances. I very quickly found that I was not cut out to be a race director as a career path. I gained a new appreciation and respect for race directors, especially those willing to take on a multi-sport event. The day after the last one I did (which all said was a great success) I was sore in places I didn't know existed. I thought I had competed in the race except that I probably would have recovered quicker had I actually done so.
