Attractive vistas begin at the heart of Moultrie in the downtown square, where our turn-of-the-century Court House stands, framed by huge magnolia trees. In outlying areas of the county, you'll find vast farmlands and rolling acreage to wander and enjoy. You'll be transported through time, back to 1539 when the Spanish explorer DeSoto first ventured down the Ochlocknee River through the lush pine forest of southwest Georgia. T his very region became Colquitt County, the 115th county in the state, by an act of the Georgia Legislature on February 25, 1856. The County was named in honor of Walter T. Colquitt, a minister, statesman and lawyer who was admired as a military leader in the mid-1860's. Colquitt served in the Georgia Senate and in both Houses of the US Congress. I n 1879, a county seat was formed at the center of the County, and named for General William Moultrie, a Revolutionary War hero, and later, governor of his home state of South Carolina.

Users Group Keep up on the latest in Kimball and Banner Counties, Read the Observer Genealogists, find information about Kimball at NEGenWeb Project Caboose Park reminds citizens that Kimball traces its history back to 1867 when the Union Pacific Railroad construction reached the site of the present day town's location. The railroad established a station, calling it Antelope, because large herds of antelope roamed in the area, and the tiny settlement of Antelopeville sprang up beside it. For a number of years, the only activity in the vicinity consisted of railroad crews stopping for food and rest, and the huge Bay State Livestock Company, cattle operation. In 1877, the little town's first post office was established, and in 1881, the first school was started through the efforts of Mary Lynch, wife of a section foreman for the railroad. The Union Pacific began selling off its land in 1884, opening the way for settlement. By the end of 1885, the town had a hotel, two professional offices, a newspaper, several retail shops and a new name - Kimball. The new name came from an official of the Union Pacific Railroad, Thomas L. Kimball, later to become vice-president and general manager of the railroad.

Historic Resources Contact Us Community Calendar Visit www.historicvienna.com History of Vienna Dooly's first seat of county government was established in 1824, three years after the original county charter, in a community named Berrien. However, most of the early settlers located on the banks of the Flint River. So in 1836 the county seat was moved to Drayton, one mile east of the river. In 1839 the State Legislature authorized the county seat be returned to its original site, apparently in order to be in a more centralized location in the large county. On February 8, 1841, the county seat formally assumed the name Vienna, after the beautiful Austrian capital on the Danube River. The county's first courthouse burned in 1847. The second county government office building was demolished in favor of the current structure which now overlooks the central city park where the second county courthouse once stood.
