    Penn retracts just a bit...
Like every great dynasty, the Penn track team had a bit of a hiatus. Although the team won the Ivy League in 1941 and 1946, it no longer had the continuity of dominance that linked the Olympians of old. Still, Penn wasn't in the dark. At the 1950 Penn Relays the team won both the distance medley and the 4x800; Ben Kreitzberg took the 100 title himself. Additionally, Van Zimmerman and John Gray contended nationally in the pole vault, having legendary duels with Villanova's Don Bragg at close to world record height. The gem of this interreum period was John Haines, who crushed the competition single-handedly from 1953-1956, winning the AAU National Indoor 60m dash four times in a row and qualifying for the 1956 Olympic trials final heat in three events (100, 200, and 400).

The victorious Japanese team (front) defeated the Soviet team (back) in the ladies finals.
Under the urging of Kano Jigoro, a judo athlete, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) was established in 1911. Two athletes were sent to participate at the Fifth Olympiad in Stockholm the following year. The first 2 Japanese to participate as members of a Japanese team were Mishima Yahiko, a sprinter, and Kanaguri Shiro, a long-distance runner. Though the next games were to be held in 1916, they were canceled due to World War I. By the 1920 Games at Antwerp, Japan had fielded a team of 15, and earned its first awards: a pair of silver medals in singles and doubles tennis. At the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, Japan took its first 2 gold medals, in track and field, and swimming. Athlete Hitomi Kinue became the first woman to join a Japanese Olympic contingent. She received a silver medal in the 800-meter event, and her success encouraged more women to take up competitive sports. A contingent of 131 members represented Japan at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles, including 16 women. Japanese athletes earned a total of 7 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze medals in track and field, swimming, equestrian events, and field hockey.

Athletics is the oldest organised sport and can be split into four activities - running and walking (track) and throwing and jumping (field). No one's sure when athletics first started but humans have raced and competed against each other since ancient times. Athletics includes cross-country, fell and hill running, as well as track and field: Track: sprint (100m to 400m), middle- and long-distance (800m to 10,000m), marathon, hurdles, relays, steeplechase, walk (20,000m and 50,000m) Field: high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, javelin, shot put, discus, hammer
    • Nearly 4,000 years ago, sport was played at the festival of Lugnasad or the Tailteann Games in Ireland. Events included running, pole vault, hammer throwing, horse races and chariot races.
    • Athletics featured prominently in the Olympic Games - the earliest recorded were in Ancient Greece in 776 BC. They were held for around a thousand years before being abolished by a Roman Emperor who didn't like 'pagan' festivals.

Beamon's jump was a world record that eclipsed the previous record by 21 3/4 inches. The jump still stands as an Olympic record, and stood as a world record until Mike Powell leapt 29' 4 1/2" at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo.

Figure Skating, 1948, '52 (2 golds) In 1948, Button became the first U.S. figure skater to win an Olympic gold medal, enthralling spectators in St. Moritz with never-before-attempted maneuvers such as the flying sitspin, flying camel, double axel, double lutz and double flip. He followed that performance up with a second gold in 1952 in Oslo. In both performances combined, only one of the 18 judges did not award Button a first-place vote.

March 30 Utah Central Mass Striders led the East to an impressive haul of medals at the 3rd annual United States Snowshoe Association National Championships. The field of 74 runners from 22 states covered 10K on a two loop course that was at 8000' elevation and included 1200' of climb. Not surprisingly, those with mountain running successes achieved high placings in the race. Highest overall finisher was Dave Dunham , (Central Mass Striders) fourth in 49:23, missing a chance to complete his set of medals after placing first and second the past two years. Winners of the two East Regional qualifiers, NE Mountain/Trail Chair Richard Bolt and Paul Low (both CMS) were close behind in eigth and tenth, respectively, with Ethan Hemphill (Dirigo RC) 12th and masters champion Dan Verrington (CMS) took 13th overall (53:29).

    Development
The revival of the Olympic Games in 1896, unlike the original Games, has a clear, concise history. team dominated the track and field events, taking first place in 9 of the 12 events. The Games were a success, and a second Olympiad, to be held in France, was scheduled. Olympic Games were held in 1900 and 1904, and by 1908 the number of competitors more than quadrupled the number at Athensfrom 311 to 2,082. Although the Olympic Games have been increasingly politicized, the ideal of the world's best athletes competing against each other in the arena of so-called pure sport has been at least partially realized, especially from the athletes' point of view. And even though skill and courage are manifested by most Olympic participants, the great gold medalists are the ones who are most often remembered. More History

    WOMEN and SPORT HISTORY
The Women's Olympic Games: Important Breakthrough Obscured By Time by Bruce Kidd
Published in CAAWS Action Bulletin, Spring 1994 The Women's Olympic Games have long been forgotten, but during the 1920s and 1930s they were an important, international focal point for feminist efforts to improve women's sporting opportunities. The Women's Olympics were the brainchild of the remarkable Alice Milliat of France. A translator by profession, a rower and sports administrator by avocation, she was founder and president of La Fédération Sportive Féminine Internationale (FSFI). She started the Women's Games in direct response to the repeated refusal of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) to put women's track and field on the program of the Olympic Games which they organized. The first "women's Olympic Games" was a one-day track meet in Paris in 1922. Eighteen athletes broke world records before 20,000 spectators. The second Games were held in Gothenberg, Sweden, four years later. Women from 10 nations, including distant Japan, took part. (Canada was not one of them). With a spectacular opening ceremony and marchpast, the patronage of the Swedish royal family, and several world records, the Games evoked comparisons with the IOC's Stockholm Olympics of 1912. Although Milliat kept her part of the bargain, the IAAF subsequently granted only five events. A majority of the FSFI went along, ensuring women's competition at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam where
