A brief look at humankind's most enduring sports spectacle. The Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games were celebrated 320 times every four years in the sacred stadium at Olympia, Greece, beginning in 776 BC Though boxing and wrestling were added later, the first Olympic event was a sprint. The prize was an olive leaf and deification by poets, as well as recognition as a hero forever. The Modern Olympic Games Athens 1896

Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

Indiana has been rich with Olympic track and field talent, dating back to the Olympic Games of 1904 held in St. Louis. Leroy Samse (pole vault - silver medal) and Thad Shideler (110-meter hurdles - silver medal) were the first in a long line of Hoosier athletes to compete for their country. The 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, will mark the fifth consecutive Olympics that Indiana will have a representative present.
IU has sent 23 different athletes to the Olympic Games a total of 28 times. Fred Wilt ran the 10,000-meters in 1948 and again in 1952. Milt Campbell was a decathlete in 1952 (silver medal) and again in 1956 in Melbourne, Australia. That year he brought home the gold for the United States. Bob Kennedy has run the 5,00-meters in the last two Summer Games. Jim Spivey is the only three-time performer, appearing in 1984 in Los Angeles in the 1,500-meters, and then again in 1992 in the 1,500-meters and in 1996 competing in the 5,000-meters.

Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.
