TTPF offers regularity and continuity in communication within nations, and across the Pacific, by funding regional workshops, conference presentations, and publication of reports, guides and prototype classroom materials. TTPF builds on a series of regional workshops for history teachers and takes a wider scope by including the study and teaching of geography, politics, environmental studies and generally all social studies and social sciences, reflecting the linked reality of such teaching in the Pacific Islands. Other Useful Websites History According to Fijian legend, the great chief Lutunasobasoba led his people across the seas to the new land of Fiji . Most authorities agree that people came into the Pacific from Southeast Asia via Indonesia. Here the Melanesians and the Polynesians mixed to create a highly developed society long before the arrival of the Europeans. The European discoveries of the Fiji group were accidental. The first of these discoveries was made in 1643 by the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman and English navigators, including Captain James Cook who sailed through in 1774, and made further explorations in the 18th century. Major credit for the discovery and recording of the islands went to Captain William Bligh who sailed through Fiji after the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. The first Europeans to land and live among the Fijians were shipwrecked sailors and runaway convicts from the Australian penal settlements. Sandalwood traders and missionaries came by the mid 19th century. Cannibalism practised in Fiji at that time quickly disappeared as missionaries gained influence. When Ratu Seru Cakobau accepted Christianity in 1854, the rest of the country soon followed and tribal warfare came to an end.

Environment History The history of Tonga can be traced as far back as 950 AD, during the rule of 'Aho'eitu, the first Tu'i Tonga, or King of Tonga. He was both the civil and religious ruler of Tonga, and exercised tremendous power. By the 15th century AD, civil wars had begun, and the ruling Tu'i Tonga was increasingly under threat of assassination. As a result, the Tu'i, Kau'ulufonua Fekai, established another line of kings, known as the Tu'i Ha'atakalaua. Kau'ulufonua Fekai appointed his younger brother Mo'ungamotu'a as the first Tu'i Ha'atakalaua, and bestowed all the temporal (civil) functions onto the new line. The Tu'i Tonga retained the religious functions, and, as a result, remained mainly in the background. By the time of the sixth Tu'i Ha'atakalaua, another subdivision of power took place. None of these phases has ended or is likely to end. These phases are publishing by religious organizations, colonial governments, independent governments, transnational agencies (regional and international governmental and non-governmental organizations), and individuals and firms. Religious organizations Member of the London Missionary Society began publishing in the Society Islands in 1817; the first publication was a spelling book. Soon afterward, publishing by the LMS and other religious orders occurred in other islands: 1822 in Hawaii; 1831 in Tonga; 1834 in the Cook Islands; 1837 in the Gambier Islands; 1839 in Fiji; 1844 in Wallis; 1848 in Vanuatu; 1852 in the Loyalty Islands; 1854 in New Caledonia; 1856 in the Caroline Islands; 1860 in the Marshall Islands and 1863 in the Gilbert Islands (Lingenfelter 1967). Many church histories contain references to their publishing activities. Because churches were involved not only in religious proselytizing but also, as importantly, in teaching literacy and numeracy, then later subject matter, they produced grammars, readers and textbooks. TONGA BRIEF HISTORY The ancient regal system of Tonga (or the Friendly Islands) evolved into a tri-partite system of rulers, styled the Tu'i Tonga, the Tu'i Ha'a Takala'ua and the Tu'i Kanokupolu. All three shared the same descent through the Tu'i Tonga line. Tonga was once a powerful Empire ruling faraway lands, including Samoa, parts of Fiji, the Cook Islands, Niue and Fotuna. The people of Fotuna breached convention by killing the sacred Tu'i Tonga Takala'ua ca. 1535. This act of sacrilege was a watershed. His son and successor, Tu'i Tonga Kau'-ulu'-fonua, decided to separate the religious and secular functions of his office by dividing power between himself and his half-brother. Mo'ungamotu'a, accordingly became the first Tu'i Ha'a Takala'ua, responsible for military and civil affairs, and government of the people. Search the site History of FSP/Counterpart International The Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific On January 27, 1965, the Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific (FSP) was formally incorporated as a tax-exempt, non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian voluntary international organization. Dedicated to the rehabilitation, welfare and growth of the Pacific islands following the devastation of World War II, FSP honed a unique approach to development. Unlike many large international agencies and donor governments, which sent in teams of overseas experts to run programs, FSP focused on building the institutions of a society that could help itself. When FSP began its work in the Pacific Islands in 1963, almost all of the islands were colonial societies with powerful colonial officers running the civil service, education, health and other national structures. FSP became the principal secular non-governmental organization (NGO) to assist islanders during their transition to independence and sovereignty. When the New Hebrides became independent as Vanuatu in 1980, for example, its first Prime Minister and its first Foreign Minister were graduates of FSP programs. FSP was the also the only NGO to work with all of the churches in a region where ninety-five per cent of the people are Christian. In 1967 FSP published a nine volume socio-economic survey on the Pacific Islands, and in 1968 its office in Sydney, Australia was established to coordinate programs in the Pacific region.
