History Regional Priory Port of Spain ... Links History of the Dominicans in Trinidad and Tobago The Dominicans (Order of Preachers) are a Catholic religious order founded by Dominic de Guzman in 1215. The history of the Dominican friars here goes as back as far as 1513, when the first missionaries – two Spanish Dominicans, Francisco de Cordova and Juan Graces – set foot in Trinidad. They were also to be the first Christian martyrs, betrayed by the Spanish soldiers who came with them. After a lapse of 350 years, the Dominican friars returned to Trinidad. They came in 1864, a party of six friars from the French province of Lyons, who had been requested by the newly appointed Archbishop Gonin, himself a French Dominican. On their arrival, they found four secular priests who had charge of the parish of Port of Spain. Archbishop Gonin and the six Dominicans took ip residence in the Cathedral presbytery, then situated in George Street. Due to its cramped size, the decision was made to build a new presbytery and priory nearer to the cathedral. This site was very difficult, being often under sea and regularly used as a dumping ground, so the construction took a considerable time. Eventually, on 16 th February 1880, the completed building was blessed. Built in the shape of an H, and catching the prevailing winds, it could accommodate twenty persons, and included a large refectory and oratory. A statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception adorned the center of the garden (this statue can be seen today in the compound of Nelson Street Girls’ School). This cathedral presbytery was home to every Dominican who worked in Trinidad and Tobago, and became a byword for hospitality in the wider region.

The Association of Trinidad and Tobago Insurance Companies (ATTIC) was first formed during the mid-sixties. ATTIC was registered as a company with limited guarantee in August 1966, in accordance with the Companies Ordinance Chapter 31 No.1. Government's declared policy on the localisation of the financial sector was a major determinant in its formation. However, the slow emergence of local insurance companies caused some degree of initial dormancy in the Association's activities. The mid to late seventies saw a marked increase in localisation activities and a rejuvenation of ATTIC which, by that time, had joined forces with the Life Office Association and the Local Rating Committee. While ATTIC members have looked to the Insurance Act, 1980, as the regulatory guide to doing insurance business, elements of self-regulation have been developing as a Code of Ethics and Statements of Standard Insurance Practice have been implemented. In addition, the executive has approved a framework of Strategic Planning out of which have emerged specific and critical strategic goals and actions. Some of these have been implemented; the others will be during the year 2000 and beyond.

CITIZENS FOR A BETTER TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO [CBTT] was formed on August 1, 1993 in order to help people - both here and abroad - live a better quality of life. It is a legally registered non-profit organization which embraces citizens of every creed, race and religion. CBTT, which is affiliated to CITIZENS FOR A BETTER LIFE (CBL), believes that a united people will go a long way in helping to solve the many problems people face today. Members work hard on a voluntary basis to help the disadvantaged in society because they are deeply concerned for those who are poorly clothed and fed as well as those who need living space, jobs and the other essentials of life. One of the major aims of the group is to prevent the growth of drug abuse. Volunteers attached to CBTT lecture on a regular basis to both young and old on the physical, social and legal consequences of drug abuse. As a result of this, another group known as PARENTS AGAINST DRUGS [PAD], the first group of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago, was formed in conjunction with CBTT.

    Performance Poet, Librarian, Storyteller, Author
Pearl Eintou Springer, a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, is the recipient of a national award, the Humming Bird Silver Medal, for her contribution to the development and propagation of Arts and Culture. She is the director of the National Heritage Library, which she has worked tirelessly to transform into a Centre of learning, cultural and literary expression and empowerment for all who use its facilities. A founding member of the National Drama Association, she has won a number of awards for her work on the stage. She has published three books of poetry and stories for children and recently published an anthology of her poetry entitled ‘Moving Into the Light' (Ian Randle - Publisher). Her poetry has been described by Funso Aiyejina, winner of the Commonwealth Best First Book Prize (Africa) as ‘a multi-vocal, self-critical, self-reassuring, dramatic rendering of the complex consciousness and journey(s) of the New World (African) woman. Audiences throughout the world have been inspired by her unique brand of poetry, and she holds the distinct honour of being the first national of Trinidad and Tobago to perform her poetry at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival. Her career as an activist or /artist has been a lifetime of service, to the dispossessed youth of the inner cities, to young artists, dramatists and performers and basically to any bright spark with the gleam of the future in the eyes. One of her plays 'Shades of I-She', focuses on the societal plague domestic violence and offers women an alternative to traditional coping mechanisms. The play has been performed under the patronage of the Ministry of Gender Affairs throughout Trinidad, with the support of the Dutch Embassy in Tobago, and under the auspices of UNIFEM, throughout the Caribbean. Its universal message and hard-hitting dramatic style has had such a fundamental impact on audiences in the region that there have been requests for it to be performed in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
