Dharma Haven's Tibetan Pages Overview Today Tibet, with its unique cultural heritage which incorporates Buddhist spirituality, is truly facing the threat of extinction. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, some kind of cultural genocide is taking place. Time is running out. His Holiness the Dalai Lama Efforts to preserve Tibet its environment, its people, and their culture come in two forms: direct preservation projects involving Tibetan people and those who support their efforts, and educational projects providing resources for people, mainly non Tibetans, who want to learn more about Tibet or some aspect of its culture. A vivid example of the success of the latter approach is the rapid spread of Tibetan Buddhism and the Way of Shambhala into Western countries, fueled by the avid interest of Western students hungry for genuine spiritual insight. Fortunately, many of the most accomplished Tibetan Buddhist meditation masters were able to escape from Tibet during the invasion, and to bring with them many of their treasured scriptures, art works and ritual implements. Direct help is needed, as well. For example, it is not enough to save examples of religious paintings in museums the skills involved in creating the paintings must be passed on from teacher to student, along with the understanding of the meaning of the images and their function in the meditation practice but Tibetans living in countries where they are allowed to really practice Buddhism simply cannot afford to devote their time and energy to dharma study and art work, unless someone helps to pay their living expenses. In old Tibet, the tradition of supporting monks and nuns and monasteries was strong.

9. Prostitution 'undermining Tibet culture'
JASPER BECKER in Beijing
South China Morning Post, Thursday, August 12, 1999
Prostitution has become pervasive in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, and is
destroying traditional morals, according to a human rights group.
"Many Tibetans suspect it is a deliberate attempt by the authorities to
undermine their culture," a report by the London-based Tibet Information
Network says.
Although the group says there is not enough evidence to support the
theory, the tacit endorsement of prostitution by the authorities,
including the police, was significant.
"The authorities may well feel that it is far better for Tibetans to be singing Chinese or even Tibetan nationalist pop songs in karaoke bars than to be discussing politics," says the report, entitled "Social Evils". The report contains numerous testimonies from migrant Tibetan women and others from Sichuan province who had become embroiled in the sex industry. Witnesses claimed members of the People's Armed Police were employed in running or supervising prostitution rackets.

Monlam, the Great Prayer Festival, falls on the fourth up to the eleventh day of the first Tibetan month. The event was established in 1049 by Tsong Khapa, the founder of the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama's order. It is the grandest religious festival in Tibet. Religious dances are performed and thousands of monks gather for chanting before the Jokhang Temple. Examinations taking form of sutra debates for the Geshe degree, the highest degree in Buddhist theology, are also held. Pilgrims crowd to listen to the sermons while others give religious donations.

White Paper Refutes Dalai's Allegation of "Tibet Culture Extinction "
Full Text of the White Paper
The Information Office of the State Council said in a white paper Thursday that the Dalai Lama clique's prattling about the "extinction of Tibet culture" is in essence to demand that modern Tibetan people keep the life styles and cultural values of old Tibet's feudal serfdom wholly intact.
The so-called extinction "is completely ridiculous, for it goes against the tide of progress of the times and the fundamental interests of the Tibetan people," the white paper on the development of Tibet culture said. Over the past four decades and more, Tibet has made much headway in carrying forward the fine aspects of its traditional culture, while maintaining Tibetan cultural traits, it said. According to the government document, such progress is revealed prominently in the following aspects:

Tibet is rich in cultural tourism resources, so cultural tourism has a bright future, but it hasn't given full play to its role due to the limitation of the objective factors. Tibet culture travel agency is affiliated to Tibet culture department, it was founded in 1993, because of the fund shortage, it couldn't be run normally, hence the resources of Tibet cultural tourism was not fully developed to produce its benefit as a tertiary industry. To reopen and rerun the culture travel agency is one of the most important actions to construct cultural industry. Project content : To develop comprehensively the cultural tourist resources, to receive visitors from home and abroad.
