Motheread/Fatheread Tennessee News NAVIGATE SEARCH 12 July 2002 Training Institute held at the new Memphis/Shelby County Public Library In June of 2002, with funding provided by Assissi Foundation through the Memphis/Shelby County Library Foundation, "Using Story as a Way to Teach," an intensive 4-day, 24-classroom-hour training institute was held at the new Memphis/Shelby County Public Library. Twenty participants representing 10 agencies learned how to help all parents be reading role models for their children by using the Motheread/Fatheread approach. Motheread's training specialist, Donna Foster, led the Institute. The class, which was organized and recruited by Damone Virgilio, InfoBUS Manager and Motheread Coordinator for the Memphis/Shelby County Public Library, participated in Motheread sessions as both students and teachers. Guest speaker and humanities scholar, Marilou Awiatka, presented an engaging and thought provoking session about the importance of place in the story tradition of Native American culture.
