(Abstract, Executive Summary, Detailed Report: 74 pages, 140K) Abstract Workplace Essential Skills (WES) is a multimedia (print, video and online) course designed for pre-GED adults who want to learn how to apply for a job, increase their knowledge of the workplace environment, and refine their reading, writing, communication, and/or mathematical skills to meet the demands of common workplace settings. A summative evaluation examined the use of WES in 14 classrooms in six states and Washington, D.C. between September 2000 and June 2001. Each of the four WES content strands - reading, math, communication and employment - was tested in six or more classes. Reading and Math . The most dramatic increases were noted for students studying the Reading and Math strands (4 and 5 units of instruction respectively). Impact was assessed using two standardized tests that are widely accepted in adult education-the CASAS ECS Reading and Math tests. Forty percent of the students showed impressive gains in their scores (5 points or more), even though the instructional time in this study (24-30 hours) was considerably less than the 100 hours CASAS suggests is needed. However, 60 percent did not improve, showing the difficulty of meeting the needs of ABE students with a single instructional approach.

To support the teaching of the essential knowledge and skills, the use of a variety of rich primary and secondary source material such as biographies; novels; speeches and letters; and poetry, songs, and artworks is encouraged. Selections may include a children's biography of Stephen F. Austin. Motivating resources are also available from museums, historical sites, presidential libraries, and local and state preservation societies. The eight strands of the essential knowledge and skills for social studies are intended to be integrated for instructional purposes with the history and geography strands establishing a sense of time and a sense of place. Skills listed in the geography and social studies skills strands in subsection (b) of this section should be incorporated into the teaching of all essential knowledge and skills for social studies. A greater depth of understanding of complex content material can be attained when integrated social studies content from the various disciplines and critical-thinking skills are taught together. Throughout social studies in Kindergarten-Grade 12, students build a foundation in history; geography; economics; government; citizenship; culture; science, technology, and society; and social studies skills. The content, as appropriate for the grade level or course, enables students to understand the importance of patriotism, function in a free enterprise society, and appreciate the basic democratic values of our state and nation as referenced in the Texas Education Code, §28.002(h).

In this section are lesson plans for both elementary and secondary grades based on the objectives of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the related Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) and Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). All of these lesson plans were written by experienced teachers enrolled in graduate courses at The University of Texas at Austin. Each lesson can be downloaded and printed for easy use in class. Teaching with Standards
Texas' cultural heritage and archeology can be taught using many different objectives in different subject areas from the state-mandated curriculum guidelines, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Because archeology is an interdisciplinary field, archeological topics and skills fit easily into language arts, math, science, art, and social studies classes. Archeological content about the prehistoric and historic past fit snuggly into social studies TEKS objectives under history, geography, economics, citizenship, culture, science-technology-and society, and of course, social studies skills objectives. Suitable TEKS objectives for archeology in fourth grade and seventh grade Texas history are found below. To see TEKS for language arts, math, science, and art, visit http://www.tea.state.tx.us/teks/

    Introduction
Teenage Health Teaching Modules (THTM) is a successful, nationally used, and independently evaluated comprehensive school health curriculum for grades 6 to 12. It provides adolescents with the knowledge and skills to act in ways that enhance their immediate and long-term health. The evaluation of THTM concluded that the curriculum produced positive effects on students' health knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported behaviors. The following essential health skills are highlighted in each of the modules: risk assessment, self-assessment, communication, decision making, goal setting, health advocacy, and healthy self-management. THTM is comprised of a series of modules, each of which consists of a teacher's guide with a detailed framework for conducting classroom activities and handouts designed to be duplicated for student use. Teaching in this way prevents students from getting overwhelmed with too many little details. The documents attached are samples showing how state history can be integrated into the Core Knowledge curriculum and shared among all grade levels to provide a specific, sequential study that eliminates gaps and repetitions. The samples provided are from Texas. The summary sheet provides a general picture of a Texas history sequence, and the detailed sheets provide more specific guidance to the content that could be taught at each grade level.
