Fungal biology and other difficult to classify information
A Plain and Easy Account of British Fungi, by M.C. Cooke
Cooke's 1898 book, "A Plain and Easy Account of British Fungi (6th edition)" is an early introductory text. Mike Walton has posted it on the web.
A practical guide to mycorrhiza
A basic introduction to mycorrhizae, with tips on how to select and use inoculum in your garden or landscape. A Japanese version is also available.
A Treatise on the Esculent Funguses of Britain, by C.D. Badham
Badham's 1847 book, "A Treatise on the Esculent Funguses of England" is an early account of edible fungi. Many of the scientific names have changed now, but the text and its accompanying plates are an interesting diversion. Mike Walton has posted it on the web.
Agaricales of the Hawaiian Islands
Both native and introduced mushrooms are found on the Hawaiian Islands, the latter being especially plentiful. This site includes photographs and catalogs of Hawaiian agarics.

  • Fish are fun!

  • FISH : Any of a large group of cold-blooded, finned aquatic vertebrates. Fish are generally scaled and respire by passing water over gills.Modern fish are divided into three classes. I. AGNATHA, primitive jawless fish.Lampreys and Hagfish II. CHONDRICHTHYES, the jawed fish with cartilaginous skeletons. Sharks, Rays, Rat-Fishes III. OSTEICHTHYES, fish with bony skeletons.Lungfish, Trout, Bass, Salmon, Perch, Parrot Fish
Fish come in all shapes and sizes, some are free swimming, while others rest on the bottom of the sea, some are herbivores and others are carnivores, and some lay eggs while others give live birth and parental care to their young. FISH: the members of a single species FISHES: more than one species of fish FISHES- class Agnatha Characteristics- agnatha
    • Primitive No jaws Cartilaginous skeleton Scaleless skin Oral sucker in place of jaws Predators and filter feeders anticoagulating saliva fresh and salt water some anadromous
FISH- class Chondrichthyes Members of the class Chondrichthyes ("cartilage-fish") include the sharks, skates, rays, and ratfish. These fish have a cartilaginous skeleton, but their ancestors were bony animals. These were the first fish to exhibit paired fins. Chondrichthyes lack swim bladders, have spiral valve intestines, exhibit internal fertilization, and posses 5-7 gill arches (most have 5). They have cartilaginous upper and loosely attached lower jaws with a significant array of teeth. Their skin is covered with teethlike denticles which gives it the texture and abrasive quality of sandpaper.

Welcome to the Biology 120 Plant and Animal Phylogeny Exercise!
Information for anyone who may have wandered here from outside of UTM:
This exercise is designed for students taking Biology 120 (the second term of introductory biology) at The Univerisity of Tennessee at Martin . This course is offered each term through the department of Biological Sciences and is designed to introduce areas of ecology, evolution, and organismic biology to biology majors and non-majors.
Goals of this exercise:
[Note that clicking on any of these goals will take you directly to the section most relevant to that goal. As you read through the exercise, you will from time to time have an opportunity to click on index ; if you do so, it will return you to this point.]
  • Review phylogeny and phylogenetic trees
  • Introduce the area of taxonomy
  • Introduce the major groups of plants, and the plant traits that provide a basis for their classification
  • Introduce the major groups of animals, and the animal traits that provide a basis for their classification ...
  • Visit some "museums" on the world-wide web to obtain additional information and viewpoints on the phylogeny and classification of life

Officially entitled "Inventory Catalogue of Hawai`i's Coral Reefs" the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative Computer Interactive Bibliography (HCRIB) is a project of the Hawai`i Wildlife Fund (Principal Investigators, Carl J. Berg and Hannah J. Barnard) in collaboration with AECOS , Inc. (Eric B. Guinther, Joann Fisher, and Hilary Maybaum). This project has been supported by a grant from NOAA / U. S. Coral Reef Initiative The HCRIB is an EndNote Plus bibliographic reference data base which provides reference listings of surveys, studies, technical reports, atlases, and the like on subjects ranging from physical oceanography, biology, taxonomy, water quality, ecology, and reef resources for the main Hawaiian Islands. In gathering references for inclusion, the editors have placed particular emphasis on technical reports (essentially unpublished reports) by corporations, consultants, students, organizations, and government agencies for the reason that these types of studies and surveys are most difficult to track through standard bibliographic data bases. Also, far greater numbers of field surveys and site specific observations are available from this "gray" literature than anywhere else. References listed in this database are limited to marine environments found around the main Hawaiian Islands from the shore out to a depth of about 60 feet. A similar data base for Hawai`i fresh and brackish waters is under development (see
