Order: Lamniformes (mackerel sharks)
Family: Cetorhinidae (Basking Sharks)
Genus Cetorhinus Scientific name: Cetorhinus maximus (Gunnerus, 1765).
Common name: Basking Shark The first ancient sharks swam in the ocean about 400 million years ago, during the Devonian Period, less than 50 million years after the first land animals appeared and long before the first dinosaurs and mammals. These primitive sharks are now extinct, but have been replaced by many others that still occur in our seas today. The Lamnid sharks, which is the Order into which most taxonomists place the Basking Shark, have been around since the days of the dinosaurs. The first records of filter feeding sharks occour some 50 million years ago, although current research may show a much earlier ancestry going back some 205 million years ago ( C.Duffin 1998 The cartilaginous fishes are classified by taxonomists as Class Chondrichthyes. This is further subdivided into two subclasses: the Elasmobranchii (sharks and rays) and the Holocephali (chimaeras). Sharks are further subdivided into Orders and Families, as shown above. However, taxonomists are always discussing the precise relationship between different Orders and Families, and the above listing could change in the future. Although Basking Sharks are mentioned in some earlier books, Johann Gunnerus (a Norwegian naturalist and the Bishop of Trondheim) made the first scientific description of the Basking Shark in 1765, calling it

TAXONOMY AND BIOLOGY OF PARASITIC HYMENOPTERA 23 April - 1 May 2003 An intensive residential course at Imperial College, Silwood Park Organised jointly by the Department of Entomology, The Natural History Museum, London and the Department of Biology, Imperial College, University of London
    INTRODUCTION

Parasitic Hymenoptera are very numerous, diverse, economically important, and of great ecological significance. Their correct identification is vital for workers in many fields, but, because of their diversity and their often small size, they are regarded as inaccessible except to experts. However, advances in wasp systematics, encapsulated in various identification manuals, mean that most entomologists, ecologists and biological control workers can learn to identify the major groups. Accurate recognition of the families and subfamilies leads to an immediate insight into the biology and significance of the parasitic wasps concerned and can save a great deal of time and effort in sending material away for identification, as well as greatly enhancing a field worker's chances of later getting the insects identified to species level.

    Picture Gallery (3/8/2003 8:54:12 PM)
Until I can find a new webhost just for the image archives, the majority will be down at the moment. I realized that the image galleries were a problem when I checked my server stats and saw 1.2 GB of bandwidth used in two days, and I am only given 10 GB in per month, and charged for any bandwidth over that. The wolves galleries are still up, since that is the most popular, I believe, and will continue to be up as long as it does not continue to be a problem. If anyone knows of a cheap webhost that has tons of space (around 200 mb would be nice) and unlimited or a lot of bandwidth (definitely over 10 GB/month) then let me know so I can move my galleries there. In the meantime, enjoy the wolf images. Big news (2/17/2003 5:45:42 PM) Several things, people. The image galleries aside, I have reconstructed my e-card shop. No more annoying banner ads! I finally broke down and downloaded a free cgi script to run it exclusively from my site. Better things ahead... Also, if you notice at the bottom of every single page (at least the animal info, image galleries and artwork section so far) there is a footer line with lines to My Email, the guestbook, Recommend this page, the Glossary, and the anti-hotlinking message. This was created for easier access and to facilitate feedback. The Recommend this page is a neat script that allows the visitor to recommend specific pages within the site, ie: the page you are on when you click the link. If you want to recommend the site itself, go to the main page (this one) and click the link below. Its that simple.

    With
Ms. M. Hello! Welcome to my webpage. This page is being created to help my students and the members of the school club that I sponsor. The club is a Marine Science Club. I teach Biology and Marine Biology. While trying to get the members of my club prepared for the National Ocean Science Bowl, and having my students do a project on taxonomy, I found that it isn't simple to find full taxonomy without a lot of trouble. Thus was the beginning of this project.
I attempt to make information available for my students. Being a very small district (only one high school) and on the lower end of the financial scheme, any extra info. has to be donated. This is my donation. Hopefully this site will be of some value to others (not just my students).
I am rather new at making a wegpage, so please be patient with me. I will be updating this site daily. I would appreciate any feedback. Also, donations are always welcome to help the club make it to the National Ocean Science Bowl. If you would like to help out please click on the link below.
    Thank you for visiting

    COA Presents:
    CONCH-L
Are you having trouble finding the online information you need about the hobby of conchology? Do you want to link up with other shellers? To answer your needs, the Conchologists of America has established the Conch-List, CONCH-L, the first Listserv expressly for shell collectors. You can subscribe by sending your email address immediately. Conch-L will provide a forum for conchologists, indeed, for anyone with an interest in mollusks, to discuss any topic related to conchology. Looking for storage cabinets for your collection? Want to know how to start a catalog? Do you just want to talk shells with a like-minded group of people? Or find a good spot for a shelling vacation? The Conch-L will help you get it together. Here is your opportunity to interact by email with conchologists around the world. Get answers to your questions from other members, find shellers with similar interests, report new finds and field observations, help others learn more about our fascinating hobby. And you can keep up with events in the shell world: messages about meetings, shell shows, new species, new regulations, software for the collector, conventions, and exhibitions will be posted frequently. In fact, CONCH-L will host messages on just about every aspect of conchology. Your interests and your participation are our only limitations. Both beginners and advanced conchologists alike will find our list server useful. We also invite and encourage the professional community to participate on CONCH-L. We will, as always, need you, your interest and your advice.

Of particular importance is gaining an understanding of the philosophical basesin taxonomy and the relevance of this field to other areas of biology.
    http://www.colby.edu/info.tech/BI211/Bio211.html
An introduction to the principles and practice of flowering plant taxonomy. Emphasis is placed on acquiring the facility to use appropriate terminology in order to identify plants, as well as understanding the historical context and investigative procedures of taxonomists in designing a classification. Of particular importance is gaining an understanding of the philosophical bases in taxonomy and the relevance of this field to other areas of biology. Course
    Objectives:
    • Learn vegetative and reproductive features and terminology that are useful in the identification of flowering plants. Gain ability to use published keys for the identification of flowering plants. Learn to recognize some of the common and unusual families of flowering plants in Maine. Understand the principles of plant taxonomy, including evolutionary trends, patterns of speciation, biogeography, and floral biology. Gain an understanding of the relationships between evolutionary mechanisms, evolutionary history, and the classification of organisms. Develop an ability to critically examine the extent to which a classification system reflects relationships between organisms.
