Each "subscriber" may contribute to the ongoing discussion, and any contributions are automatically forwarded to everyone on the list. To network among educators I suggest subscribing to one or several of the many mailrings available at The Teacher's Net . They have separate mailrings for each grade, along with specialty rings. It is the best source available in my opinion.

What does Chautauqua mean?
Basically Chautauqua is a wonderful city located along the shores of a beautiful lake in Southwestern New York. But to many the meaning behind "Chautauqua" is what developed along this beautiful lake's shoreline in a grove of trees beginning in 1874. Chautauqua roots lie in peoples thirst for more knowledge. What is Chautauqua?
Theodore Roosevelt termed it "the most American thing in America" A living history program patterned after the popular tent shows of the early 20th century. In today's Chautauqua, historic characters come alive portrayed by scholars who appear in character and perform a dramatic monologue. They speak in the character's own words, in the language of their time and recount stories from their lives. After the presentation the audience can engage in a dialogue with historic figures (like Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, or Joan of Arc). What's so great about Chautauqua?

Instructional License English as a New Language (ENL)
  • Major versus minor area: The Purdue University teacher education community supports English as a New Language as a licensing area. Unfortunately, most universities (as is the case with Purdue) emphasize ENL as a related content area but rarely as a designated major. Incorporating minors and endorsements for licensing purposes would assist in overcoming this obstacle. (General Consensus)
Exceptional Needs
  • Gifted and talented education: A concern exists about planning assumption C related to Gifted and Talented Education . This planning assumption sounds like an afterthought rather than a planning assumption. It does not appear that Gifted and Talented Education was given adequate treatment in either the exceptional needs or content standards . There is little language in the exceptional needs standards suggesting that concerted attention be given to the unique skills needed to educate learners with exceptional talents. (Gifted and Talented Division/Department of Educational Studies/School of Education) Gifted and talented: Purdue University is internationally known for its research and development in the gifted and talented field. It is regrettable that the process by which the standards for exceptional needs were developed systematically margined the role of gifted and talented within the preparation and licensing components. This is one vivid example of process superseding substance by systematically ignoring the most valued and validated components of the current licensing system.
