Instruction Accelerated Programs - Early Childhood Assistance and Academic Acceleration provide extra educational experiences to compensate for factors contributing to risk of low achievement. Federal funding sources support school wide Title I projects, and special state funding sources support projects targeting early intervention and academic acceleration. Success is evaluated by school performance on the state testing program. Exceptional Children - A broad range of services are offered to disabled students. The disabled program serves approximately 1,400 students in Special Education from ages 3 to 21. Programs are provided for students who are physically challenged, sensory impaired, speech, communication disorder, emotionally disabled and learning disabled. Preschool programs are provided for three and four year old children. The goal of the program is to serve students in the least restrictive setting possible. Gifted and Talented - The ALPHA gifted and talented program currently serves academically and artistically gifted students in grades 3-12. These programs include pull-out resource classes for students in grades 3-8, a non-credit summer enrichment class for ninth graders, a summer program for art and music, and a college credit program which serves students in grades 10-12. Students can transfer credits from this program to most public and private post-secondary schools in the state. Early Childhood - Comprehensive instructional programs for four and five-year old children who reside within the school district are available. The district provides developmentally appropriate foundation programs with emphasis given to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of the child. Over 600 children are involved in the district's Child Development and Kindergarten classes.

In grades K-5, identified students are served at their individual campus within the regular classroom setting by teachers who have the required G/T training. Kindergarten students have the opportunity to develop emerging skills through an introduction to problem solving and original product development. In grades 1-5, students continue to develop creative and productive thinking and innovative products. A differentiated curriculum in the four content areas is aimed at developing higher level thinking skills and processes. Acceleration is encouraged when appropriate. Each elementary student has an Individual Student Performance Record prepared by the teacher to document the differentiated curriculum and share with parents twice a year. Students are encouraged to participate in the District Creative Problem Solving bowl, Odyssey of the Mind, and UIL events.
    Voyages
Voyages is a discovery learning program implemented for grades K-5 to provide exploration of an integrated curriculum resulting in research, investigations, and advanced products. Students go to Voyages once a week for two hours of specialized instruction which includes interpersonal effectiveness, creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, communication, and independent study, emphasizing the use of technology.

Gifted and Talented Education Who and What We Are Santa Barbara High School District Secondary GATE Program Who and What We Are Our Commitment The Santa Barbara School Districts are committed to providing the professional instruction and guidance necessary for students to achieve academic excellence as well as an understanding and respect for diversity. In addition, students attain the ability to balance individual interests and civic responsibilities, participate in an increasingly technological society, and take responsibility for their own learning and development. This commitment includes providing specialized programs for students with extraordinary learning needs due to their advanced intellectual and academic ability. To provide for the needs of this student population, each school has a program for the gifted and talented. The gifted and talented program at each school furnishes learning experiences and opportunities that are commensurate with the needs and abilities of these students. Goals and Methodology Our goals are to meet students' intellectual needs, motivate students to reach their highest potential, increase the application of critical thinking skills, and promote positive social-emotional skills. These are in keeping with the State Education Code’s directions for programs for the gifted and talented. Differentiation of course content is achieved through added depth, complexity, novelty, and acceleration. Teachers have received inservice in differentiation. In addition, the California Association of the Gifted has published a book which explains each of the four methods.
