Swine
It is believed that the majority of the breeds we now know are descended from the Eurasian Wild Boar ( Sus scrofa ). Archaeological evidence from the Middle East indicates domestication of the pig occurs as early as 9,000 years ago, with some evidence for domestication even earlier in China. Figurines, as well as bones, dating to the sixth and seventh millennia BC have been found at sites in the Middle East. Pigs were also a popular subject for statuettes in ancient Persia.
From here the pig spread across Asia, Europe and Africa. One interesting point, while most livestock where utilized initially by nomadic peoples, swine are more indicative of a settled farming community. The reason for this is simply because pigs are difficult to herd and move for long distances. Pigs have become vital to the economy in parts of the world. For example, there exists a "pig culture" in New Guinea as strong and complex as any African culture based on cattle. W elcome to the Breeds of Livestock resource presented by the Department of Animal Science at Oklahoma State University. This site is intended as an educational and informational resource on breeds of livestock throughout the world. We hope you enjoy the information provided and find it both educational and fun. We see this site as a continually growing resource. As time passes we will be expanding the educational and scientific information pertaining to breeds. We already have breeds from every inhabited continent and we have cooperative projects underway with individuals at a number of other Universities to add to our listings and to expand existing information. We would welcome additional cooperative efforts so please let us know. What is a breed? The classic definition of a "breed" is usually stated as a variation of this statement. Animals that, through selection and breeding, have come to resemble one another and pass those traits uniformly to their offspring. Unfortunately this definition leaves some unanswered questions. For example, when is a crossbred animal considered a composite breed and when do we stop thinking about them as composites? Perhaps this definition from

19. Livestock And Livelihoods In Hubli-Dharwad, India
An examination of the keeping of livestock, in particular swine and cattle, in the two cities.
http://www.ruaf.org/1-2/10-12.html
Livestock and livelihoods in Hubli-Dharwad
Fiona Nunan
School of Public Policy, University of Birmingham, Birmingham Email: nunanfs@spp2.bham.ac.uk A review of dairies and pig-keeping in the twin-city of Hubli-Dharwad, in the State of Karnataka, illustrates the role of livestock in household livelihood strategies in Indian cities. Small urban dairies and roaming pigs are a common sight in Hubli-Dharwad and make an important contribution to household livelihoods and urban food supplies. However, the future of livestock keeping in urban centres can be questioned, given public concerns at city and national level and recent moves by city authorities to evict pigs.
Introduction
Roaming livestock is a common sight in most urban areas of India. Livestock keeping, particularly of buffaloes, is a tradition, but buffalo, cattle, pigs and chickens are also kept in towns and cities to contribute to household livelihoods and food security. Urban centres provide a number of incentives for keeping livestock, such as foodstuffs (food waste from hotels and vegetable waste from markets and homes) and easily accessible markets, particularly for fresh milk from urban dairies. There are also, however, a number of problems with keeping livestock in urban centres, including access to grazing land and water (both for drinking and washing buffaloes and cows) and storing dung for sale. The difficulties for the urban authorities include roaming and herded animals contributing to traffic chaos, dung and fodder in storm drains, complaints about smell and concerns about health hazards.
