"The best way to preview, plan, and reserve your Caribbean cruise."
St. Lucia St. Lucia is a tropical garden carefully tended by Mother Nature. Giant fern trees and wild orchids in the rain forest, multihued parrots, banana plantations and latent volcanoes all add to the mystique of this exotic hideaway. The best snorkeling and diving is at Anse Chastenet Beach near Soufrière, and at Anse Cochon. Castries Harbour is one of the busiest ports in the West Indies because of its safe anchorage. You can shop, dine and obtain information about St. Lucia just steps away from your ship. At the harbor mouth next to the main port is Pointe Seraphine, a delightful duty-free shopping complex that also houses the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association.
Although Castries is a fairly modern city, there are numerous historic landmarks and colonial buildings decorated with graceful balconies and intricate latticework.
The area around Derek Walcott Square, the old center of town, is particularly scenic. The square, named after the St. Lucian winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, spans half an acre of fenced land embellished with a fountain, flowering trees and bushes, and an enormous 400-year-old saman tree.

In the great historical sweep of exploration and migration of the past 500 years, the Caribbean played a central role in proving beyond doubt Christopher Columbus' theory that the world was round. That fact triggered an explosion of trade that changed the economic and political structures of the world. Older civilizations of the Americas, from the Carib Indians who gave our region its name to the Mayans of the American mainland, had already been attracted by the physical beauty, fertile soil and mineral wealth of our islands and have left astonishing reminders of their time

St. Lucia is becoming one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean. Active travelers are drawn to its lush, mist covered mountains crisscrossed by rivers and tumbling waterfalls. The "trademarked" and world famous twin peaks of the Pitons rise abruptly and magnificently from the sea, while boiling lakes and steam vents remind the nature seeker of the islands volcanic origins. Set among this natural backdrop are hidden coves, honey colored beaches and sparkling reefs that attract the sunseekers, divers, sports fishermen and romantic couples. Visitors still find a unique atmosphere once they arrive. Although tourism is booming and growing fast, and the area around the capital city is certainly busy- much of the island remains splendidly rural with its people still drawing their life from the land and the sea. A journey across the island will carry you past rain forests covered in tropical vegetation and colored by the hues of flowers such as hibiscus, jasmine, orchids and frangipani. Paved and rutted roads will zig zag along the jagged coast and curve through hills suddenly revealing fishing villages lined with colorful boats and clustered around a bay as the road again resumes its course through plantation fields of bananas, coconut and sugar cane. Photographers will snap frame after frame of film filled with images of sail boats skirting the coast, farmers dressed in tropical finery at the open market, palm fringed black and gold sand beaches, historic forts and creole wooden buildings.

Your families will be happy to welcome you and share with you their West Indian culture. As school will have just closed for the summer, the young people of the community will have the opportunity to show you life "Lucian-style." You will work alongside community members in carrying out a project that will be beneficial for the community. You will also have the opportunity to visit the beach and participate in local events that your community may be holding. The Northern Coast: Following your homestay/community service project, your group will travel to the busier and more developed northern end of the island. As a relaxing way to wind down and prepare to return to the United States, your final days will be filled with fun, adventure and reflection. You will have the opportunity to lay out in the sun on the warm sandy beaches, swim in the cool and soothing waters of the Caribbean sea, tour the vibrant local markets, and sail down the coast while stopping in isolated bays to swim and snorkel. Your group will also spend a day exploring St. Lucia's neighbor, the French speaking island of Martinique.

"Yeh, you gotta watch out for the magie noir," said the driver of the airport taxi as he crashed first in, then out, of a pothole. "Fella from Soufriere I know: fell out with a local obeah [Black Magic] man. Bad business."
"Why? What happened to him?"
"Obeah man turned fella into cow. Then sold him to some dude in Antigua."
The driver shook his head: "Can't be too careful. Particularly these days."
"What do you mean? Has black magic been getting more common?" "No," said the driver. "Now the fella will probably go down with this mad beef." We were driving through a green tunnel of coconut palms on St. Lucia's Caribbean coast. Lianas and tree ferns tangled above thickets of bougainvillaea and Night Flowering Cereus: on either side rose great cathedrals of tamarind, buttressed by bushes of nutmeg and spandrels of soursop. Chickens looked down on us from their roost in the branches of a mango tree. Occasionally we would pass a village, a cluster of wooden huts painted ice cream colours with a bar sign-posted: COOL JOINT BAR - NICE PLACE FOR A BITE TO EAT or perhaps THE LOVE LIBERTY DISCO: IN GOD WE TRUST. Beyond, above the corrugated iron roofs of the rum shacks, towered the great twin peaks of St. Lucia's two tropical Matterhorns, the pitons.

History
St. Lucia was a stronghold of the Carib Indians, the early inhabitants of these islands. They did not surrender this island paradise easily and their culture can still be seen in the local crafts. The European colonization period was marked by squabbles between the British and the French. Both left their mark on the St. Lucian culture of today. Climate and Geography
THE LAND - St. Lucia is one of the Windward Islands with a land area of about 240 square miles (27 miles long and 14 miles wide). Its dramatic topography causes St. Lucia to be frequently compared to the islands in the South Pacific. The 2000-foot tall green twin peaks of the Pitons (volcanic cones) dip down to tropical valleys and banana plantations cover the rolling green hills. The tropical vegetation gives way to beautiful wide beaches. Streams, including those fed by hot springs, are abundant. THE BEACHES - All beaches on St. Lucia are public. The best beaches are on the calmer Caribbean side. The beaches around Soufriere and the Pitons have black volcanic sand. Some of the more popular beaches are Vigie Beach, La Toc, Anse Chastanet and Reduit Beach.

GEOGRAPHY
St. Lucia is of volcanic origin and around Soufriere in the South west, you can still see boiling bubbling mud pools escaping Sulphur and other gases. The volcanic crater is one of the islands main tourist attractions. The islands interior is wooded and mountainous, with Mount Gimmie (3118 ft) being the highest point on the island. Mountains run North to South with many rivers and streams running off them through fertile valleys running east to west. The "Twin" Pitons - "St. Lucia's Pyramids" are another spectacular landmark. They are on either side of Soufriere bay and their perspective changes as you view from different angles as you journey around them. The lush rain forests are now largely restricted to higher slopes of the mountains are only accessible by foot.
HISTORY The original settlers of the island migrated from the northeastern shores of the South American continent between 1000 and 500 B.C. These people were simple farmers and fishermen. Today, over 12 archaeological sites on the island bear witness to this ancient civilization. Remains of their culture consist primarily of domestic and ceremonial artifacts, ceramic objects and enigmatic cave drawings.

Our Proud Heritage
Our History: T
he Caribbean was first discovered and explored by Christopher Columbus. It was named after the CARIB, a warlike tribe of cannibalistic Indians that inhabited some of the Lesser Antilles at the time of the European conquest. T he West Indies, which form the nucleus of the Caribbean region, consist of two main groups: the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico) to the north and the Lesser Antilles, which again are subdivided into the Windward and Leeward islands, to the east.
T he major channels separating the islands are Windward Passage, between Cuba and Hispaniola; Mona Passage, between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico; and Anegada Passage, between the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. T he Caribbean Sea is a partially enclosed body of water in the Western Hemisphere, a western extension of the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by South America (Venezuela, Colombia) on the south, Central America (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico) on the west, and the islands of the West Indies on the north and east. The Yucatan Channel between Cuba and Yucatan connects the Caribbean Sea with the Gulf of Mexico, numerous passages between the islands join it to the Atlantic, and the Panama Canal furnishes access to the Pacific Ocean.

Feedback Contact Us Used Cars, New Telephone Rates and a Culture of Irrationality Governor General Prime Minister The Cabinet The Senate ... Site Help by Earl Bousquet May 28, 2002 - It is well said that there’s never a dull moment in St. Lucia. Over the years, we have developed a kind of political culture that at times allows for irrationality to prevail over sobriety, for opinions to override fact. Back in the late 70s, there were those who said that no crisis would last long enough in St. Lucia to become a crisis, because the politicians and the press could be counted on to invents a new crisis every day, every weekend. In a way, that was very true. And in a way, we’re also back to those times when when a crisis a day, a rumour per night and certainly more claims, accusations and denials than we can handle in a week have become the order of each day. But then, can the critics ever be fully satisfied? When a trunk call was 75 cents, they cried for murder for having to pay so much for a ten-second call. Just a few years later trunk calls are eliminated and they are still quarrelling. The critics complained – and rightfully so – that it was wrong to charge both caller and receiver for a cellular call. The government negotiated an agreement in which only the caller pays but the same critics are still saying it’s not good enough.
