Travel By Fingertip.....St. Lucia P oints of I nterest In S t. L ucia Castries One of the busiest port cities in the Caribbean and home to about 60,000 people. Although Castries has been, over the years, victimized by fires and hurricanes, much of the earthy beauty of its 19th Century colonial buildings and streets remain. Of particular historic interest is the area around Columbus Square and Brazil Street. Marquis Plantation: We enjoyed a wonderful trip to this working banana factory. Be prepared for a bit of mud on the shoes - as well as an interesting experience. Addr: St. Lucia Plantation Tours Ph: 442-3762. Marigot Bay History has it that in 1778, British Admiral Barrington hid his ships from the French in this secluded Bay, and saved them from destruction. Now a fun spot for yachting, swimming and socializing. Addr: South of Castries. Fort Charlotte Changing numerous times between French and British hands, this historic Fort situated on "The Hill of Good Fortune" is a burial ground for several of St. Lucia's past governors. Addr: East of Castries. Soufriere This island city dates back to the 18th Century and was named after its towering volcano. Soufriere is home to an enchanting botanic garden and the only drive-thru volcano we've ever heard of.

S t. Lucia's culture has evolved from the intermingling of the many different groups of people who have participated in its history. Each has brought different beliefs and traditions, all of which are reflected in the life of the island today. A visitor is likely to drive on the British side of the road to an Indian restaurant in a French town, greeted all along the way in Creole patois. But St. Lucia's culture extends far beyond the table, as the island has long held a reputation for its intellectual and artistic talents. St. Lucia has produced two Nobel Prizewinners: the late Sir W. Arthur Lewis, who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1979, and poet Derek Walcott, who won the 1992 Nobel Prize for Literature. To understand as well as enjoy St. Lucia's culture is largely a matter of gaining some sense of the various peoples who have contributed to it. The first of these were the Arawaks and the Caribs, Amerindian peoples indigenous to the entire Caribbean. They were expert hunters, farmers, fishermen, and skilled artists. Their primary crops were cassava, yams, sweet potatoes, all of which still play a central role in the island's food. The Amerindians were decimated by the arrival of the Europeans, and only a small number of St. Lucians can still trace their roots back to this group. Some of the few particular aspects of Amerindian culture that survive include farina and cassava bread, fish-pots and other local craft items. Some villages still practice the ancient art of fishing in dug-out canoes.

By Peter Richards
Inter Press Service PORT OF SPAIN, Apr 11 (IPS) - Every year the people of Dominica and St. Lucia celebrate 'Kweyol' or the traditional Creole language and culture. For one week in October, they dress in 'Kweyol' fashion, and on one day they speak only in 'Kweyol'. ''The sounds of Kweyol permeate the entire society and has become part of the consciousness of even those who are not primarily Kweyol speakers. The language and culture are intertwined,'' observes St. Lucia's Folk Research Centre (FRC). The FRC in a report, titled 'Status of the Kweyol Language in St. Lucia', observes that ''not only is the Kweyol language becoming more powerful, but the Kweyol culture is gaining momentum and a wider acceptance.'' Kweyol or Creole is a broken form of French, and constitutes the most important means of communication among local people mostly on those islands where there were early French settlers.

ST. LUCIA 'S SEARCH ENGINE King of the Kite: tourism soaring in Vieux Fort Prime St Lucian Sites News Sports Map ... Society S t. Lucia may be described in terms of its size (twenty seven by fourteen miles), its approximate population (160,000), its climate (tropical), or its main sources of income (banana production, tourism, light manufacturing) - but what do such descriptions mean to those of us who were born and raised here? Or to those of us who now live overseas? It doesn't stir up memories of the exhilaration felt when going up river with a gang of other kids to slide down the waterfalls, crying 'Whiiiiee Sallee!' all the way down. It doesn't convey anything of the all-familiar sight of school children, barefoot with their uniforms dishevelled, pelting stones into fruit-laden mango trees and later, bellies full, pulling the stringy bits from between their teeth with their shirtsleeves. A nd what does dry, quantitative information teach those of us who intend to visit the island for the first time, hoping for a relaxed get-away on a soft, sandy beach, or a romantic time in a smoothly-run hotel? Lets try to keep those smells, sights and sounds in mind, and remember that they are what really make up the culture and people of St. Lucia – as we take ourselves on a concise tour of the island's history, its political make-up and social structure. S th and 18 th centuries.

African, French and English cultures came together to create the unique character of St. Lucia. In October, St. Lucia celebrates this unique combination and her Creole-speaking people with Creole Heritage Month. The villages of Canaries, Choiseul, Desruisseaux, and Monchy host the festivities that build up to the main event on October 28th, Jounen Kwéyòl. At these villages throughout the month, you can get a taste of St. Lucia's spicy Creole food, learn about this vibrant culture and take part in the festivities. You couldn't find a more exceptional introduction to St. Lucia and her friendly people. Throughout the month, jump-up to Creole Calypso in Desruisseaux and Canaries. Feast on Creole food at the fair in Dennery and at the Anse-La-Raye Fish Friday. Hear the colourful narratives of the Creole tales in Monchy. Attend the opening at the Folk Theatre of the Jounen Kwéyòl show "Best of St. Lucian Folk." Admire islanders in traditional dress dancing to Creole folk music and calypso in Canaries.

At http://www.stlucia.gov.lc/saint_lucia/the_flag_of_saint_lucia.htm is the official flag of Saint Lucia. The colours has been changed in the last time, because at sites befor November last year the colours was as known (dark blue and yellow). Did anybody knows when the colours was officially changed (22.02.2002 ?) ? "
Falko Schmidt , 15 April 2002 Did you notice that in the quoted website the flag behind the photo of St Lucia Prime Minister is still dark blue ?
Armand Noel du Payrat , 17 April 2002 Note that the present PM is in office since 1997 so that his photo maight be quite old. It's interesting that both image and description are compatible - they both describe the flag as "cerulean".
Jan Zrzavy , 17 April 2002 The most intriguing fact is that the flag description says cerulean (sky) blue since its design, but has always been render a darker blue. I have been in St. Lucia, but many years ago, and it was a darker blue then.

Kids Club Holidays
St Lucia "Paradise under the Pitons" St Lucia is a breathtakingly beautiful lush tropical paradise, lapped on the West coast by the warm waters of the Caribbean and dominated by the twin peaks of the Pitons which rise from the sea to a height of more than 2,400 feet.
The mingling of British and French influence evident on St Lucia reflects the long battle for power between those two nations over this charmingly scenic island. But despite its history of struggle and conflict, the general ambience here is one of serenity and relaxation. St Lucia retains a mix of influences including French, Creole and English, each of which contributes to its language, culture and cuisine.
A rugged coastline, interrupted here and there by pretty sandy coves, is dotted with flourishing bloooms of jasmine, gardenia and passion flowers; whilst the whole island is volcanic with sulphur baths and the world's only "drive in volcano" to discover.
With its changing landscape of towering peaks, dense vegetation, rolling hillsides and tiny fishing villages, St Lucia is stunning with a landscape amongst the most dramatic in the West Indies. Labowi Promotions
Co-organizers of Jazz in the South

The group Labowi Promotions became active at the end of 1992, when it began work on the transformation and animation of the old Laborie cinema as a cultural facility, known as the Laborie Theatre. Since November 1992, the group has been able to organize and host a number of activities ranging from drama to dance, poetry and music, including the most successful Laborie Christmas Festival, now called Labfest.
"Our goal is to provide our public with the best in St. Lucia performing arts", says Augustin Barthelmy one of the organizers of the group. "Too often, productions are staged in Castries, but they are not accessible to audiences outside the capital city. This situation must change, and we want to play our part".
In may 1993 Labowi Promotions hosted a symposium on the theme "Culture and Development in Saint Lucia" in the daytime and a "Soiree Creole" in the evening on the observance of UNESCO. "World Day For Cultural Development". This was made possible with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Labour.
During a recent Survey conducted on behalf of Labowi Promotions the organization was described by all the interviewees as a group of three to four or five men who have been working together to promote cultural activities in the south of the island. Most people stated that it was an informal arrangement, but acknowledged that the group was competent, and possessed the "Chemistry" to work together. It was also described as a "Fabulous" group, which had done "Tremendous" work in the south. All persons interviewed stated that they had no information on the internal operations or goals and objectives of the group. However they were able to arrive at their own conclusion on the purposes of Labowi Promotions theses included:
