Nestled on the southwestern coast of Florida and surrounded by more than 100 barrier islands, Lee County has affectionately embraced the name "The Lee Island Coast." Like the millions of visitors who have discovered this pristine part of Florida, sports has also found its niche. The Lee Island Coast sports history dates back to 1896, when baseball began to establish Lee County as a spring training mecca. Since then, several teams and countless legends have graced the diamonds of the Lee Island Coast. Starting in 1925, the legendary Connie Mack fielded his Philadelphia Athletics 12 seasons on balmy spring days at Terry Park. Throughout the years the Lee Island Coast has been called the spring training home by the Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox. But there is more to Lee County than just baseball. The Lee Island Coast has played the perfect host to an impressive roster of visitors, including the Davis Cup, US and Olympic Sailing Trials, Amateur Athletic Union Championships, USA vs. Germany Duel Boxing Trials and USA Junior Olympic Baseball, to name just a few. Published and developed by Lee Island Coast Visitor and Convention Bureau in partnership with Miles Media Group and BVK.

OSU Sports History Minute - March 9, 2001
Now that the 2000 football team has given Beaver fans enough thrills and pride to last a long time, what are the other great moments in Oregon State sports history? This 20-part series highlights the greatest moments in OSU athletics during the past 100 years. Here are the stories of the men and women who wore the Orange and Black and, in the process, recorded a little history of their own. Part 8 of 20: One of a kind This year marks the 40th anniversary of an athletic achievement by a Beaver team that has never been duplicated at any time in the school’s history.
In 1961, the Beaver cross country team won the NCAA national championship, thus becoming the one and only OSU team to win one of the coveted NCAA awards.

Relocated from Altoona Pride in April and May 1884 before moving to Kansas City. Folded with league September 1884. When Altoona folded in early June, Union Association president Henry V. Lucas was forced to seek a replacement. He turned to Kansas City to fill the void, a city he should have considered over Altoona before the start of the season anyway. In order to join the UA, team owner Americus V. McKim was forced to accept the most restrictive condition ever imposed on a club: even though Kansas City's games would count in their opponents' records, Kansas City could not win a championship. In effect, the Unions would be in the UA but would have no official record.

Miami Valley Sports History Committee
Carillon Historical Park's Governing Board has identified the region's sports history as a gap in the important stories now being presented. The Miami Valley Sports History Committee has begun researching stories with certain guidelines:
  • The Miami Valley, for these purposes, is Montgomery County and all its contiguous counties. Stories will cover all Miami Valley sports with national or international impact. The focus will be on players, teams, events and sites that had significant influence. Other Halls of Fame and sports commemorations will not be duplicated. The research could result in a tangible form of a rotating or permanent exhibit and/or a publication.
  • The Miami Valley Sport History Committee is comprised of about 25 individuals interested in sports, including former players, writers, researchers, and others, who meet every couple of months to discuss findings, exchange leads and have fun talking about sports in our area. They operate through sub committees, one for each sport, i.e. football, basketball, Dayton Marcos, etc. If you have stories to tell, memorabilia to suggest or would like to participate, contact

Larry Bird, after Michael Jordan set the NBA playoff record for most points in a game with 63 in a double-overtime loss to the Boston Celtics, 135-131
Mike is better than the rest. Michael Jordan, who dominated the NBA and won six championships, has been named the greatest North American athlete of the 20th century by SportsCentury's distinguished 48-member panel . Babe Ruth, who revolutionized baseball in the 1920s, finished second in the voting. Michael Jordan was in a class by himself in the NBA. Playing 11 full seasons in the NBA, Jordan led the league in scoring 10 times, and in 1986-87 became the only player besides Wilt Chamberlain to score more than 3,000 points in a season, getting 3,041. His 31.5 scoring average is the highest in NBA history and with 29,277 points he's fourth all-time behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chamberlain and Karl Malone. "Jordan said, 'A lot of times I'll dream I'm a bad alcoholic and I can't stop drinking and embarrassing myself. And I'm going to lose everything. I wake up from that dream in a sweat.' He knows that one slip up, one mistake, can throw it all away. And I think he lived in terror of that for a very long time," says author Bob Greene about Michael Jordan on ESPN's SportsCentury show.

And so it begins By Jeff Hale , Free Press Sports Reporter
September 1997 What you are about to read is ambitious but it is also musty. It is historical yet ground-breaking. It is decades-old yet vibrant. It is something you may think you know but will be surprised when you make its reacquaintance. It is the sports history of London from the 19th century through to the beginning of the 1990s. It's a project whose initial work was started more than two years ago. What you'll read is a look back at how London developed in sports. What sports were played? By whom? What sports did the public follow? Who were the personalities of the time? How did sports evolve in the city?

The games that we play today are virtually the same games we played ninety years ago with a few exceptions. The first difference is the equipment we play with. The second difference is the skill level of the players. The third and possibly most important difference is integration of the games. If you take away the new equipment, and the players skill levels you still have the same game with the same basic principle. However, if you take away the integration of the game you would take away a whole other dimension that people of different race have brought to the game we play. Golfers would still be driven balls without tees. Players like Hank Aaron, Tiger Woods, and Muhammad Ali would never have rewritten the record books. Most importantly, however, these players of other races would still be playing in obscurity never being recognized for the greatness of their athletic ability. On this web page, we will examine the change in sports
