History
Traditional speed skating is conducted on a 400-meter track against the clock. Although there are two racers on the course simultaneously, they're not really competing against one another. The finishing time is the deciding factor. Since 1998, the 500-meter has been decided by the aggregate time in two trials. In all other races, there's a single time trial. Three women's races were held as demonstration events in 1932, but women's speed skating didn't become a medal sport until 1960. Top of page

    Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
    1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

    History
Short track speed skating was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Winter Olympics and became a medal sport in 1992. This form of the sport is also known as "pack style," because a pack of four skaters compete on a 111.12-meter track, with the winner being the first to cross the finish line. The four corners of the course are marked by rubber blocks. Skaters are allowed to enter the infield, but they have to pass outside the markers on the turns. A series of elimination heats are held, leading to the semi-finals and finals. Semi-final losers compete in their own final to determine fifth through eighth places. Top of page

Although archeologists in Scandinavia have relics that demonstrate primitive people glided over the ice using skates fashioned from animal bone and straps of leather, it was in the Netherlands that skating became a mode of transportation and national passion. Using the frozen canals for the track, speed skating became a winter past time and quickly gained in popularity across Europe. The first known skating competition is thought to have been a 15-meter race and took place in England on February 4, 1763.

Speed skating has been part of the Olympics since the first Winter Games in 1924. At first, only men raced, but in 1960, four women's speed skating events were held at the Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley. The women's 5000 meter event was added to the Olympic program in Calgary in 1988, completing the 10 events that will be currently raced in Salt Lake City: 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m. Each race (for both men and women) has a slightly different rule for winning. The 2002 Speed Skating events will be held in the 6,000 seat Utah Olympic Oval which is the world's highest-altitude indoor skating oval

Le May Doan leads charge into World Cup speed-skating history
CALGARY (CP) Canadian Catriona Le May Doan led the charge into World Cup speed-skating history Saturday at Calgary's Olympic Oval. Le May Doan, of Saskatoon, posted her fastest time of the year in a World Cup event Saturday, winning the first leg of the women's 500-metre event with a skate of 37.42 seconds. That's just off Le May Doan's world-record time of 37.40 seconds, set earlier this year. But Le May Doan, the 1988 Olympic 500-metre champion in Nagano, Japan, was one of three skaters to finish under 38 seconds, the first time that feat has ever been accomplished in a women's World Cup competition. Russian Svetlana Zhurova was second in 37.79 seconds, just ahead of German Sabine Volker, who was third in 37.95. The second leg is slated for Sunday. reprinted with permission

KLASSEN MAKES CANADIAN SPEED SKATING HISTORY AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
OTTAWA- Cindy Klassen of Winnipeg, who won Canada's first medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics, posted Canada's best performance in 26 years at the long track speed skating all around world championships Sunday placing second overall.
The only skater to ever do better than Klassen at the event was Sylvia Burka, also from Winnipeg, who won the overall gold in 1976. Klassen though became the first Canadian to win a medal in each event with silver in the 500, 1,500 and 5,000 and bronze in the 3,000.
"It's a really nice way to end the year," said Klassen. "I feel second place is outstanding and I'm really happy. It's hard to compare the results with the Olympics. The Olympics are so big but to do well in Holland where the sport is huge is pretty special too. "
At Whistler, B.C., some new stars are emerging at the Canadian alpine skiing championships. For example on Saturday Erik Guay of Mont-Tremblant, Que., and Britt Janyk of Whistler won the men's and women's super G titles. It was first national crown for both skiers. The nationals continue through to Wednesday.
"There are a lot of young skier who are really good and coming up strong," said Guay. "We have to work together to form a great team and keep pushing each other on."

    How The Olympic Games Began
Nearly 3,000 years of Olympic history
The Olympics first started nearly 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece . The ancient Greek civilization enjoyed many sports—including running, boxing and wrestling—because they believed physical activity and competition were very important. Every Greek boy was expected to participate in sports , because the Greeks believed the skills they learned in sports would make them better warriors.
    In honour of Zeus
The ancient Greeks also believed religion was very important. Zeus was their greatest god. The ancient Greeks built a shrine to honour Zeus in the Valley of Olympia. Greeks gathered at the shrine to play their favourite sports as part of their religious ceremonies.
In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks first recorded the results from their sporting events held in honour of Zeus. Every four years after that these Games were held, and because they took place in the Valley of Olympia , they became known as the Olympic Games
    Sports in ancient Greece
Sports in the ancient Games usually included:
    • Footracing Wrestling Chariot Racing Running Discus Long Jump Javelin Throwing
    Gifts of gold
At the Games, olive wreaths were given to the winners. Winners became heroes in their hometowns, and
