    Collection Development
Space Physics and Astronomy Debra K. Bailey debrae@rice.edu [General policy] Current Collection Policy:
Space physics and astronomy is a relatively new field, and researchers rely on the physics collection as well as materials specific to the field of space science. The early physics collection is very strong, dating back to the earliest days of Rice Institute. The physics collection is strong in publications from scholarly societies and emphasizes nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, quantum electronics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, surface physics, and theoretical physics. The space physics collection emphasizes ground and space-based observational astronomy, theoretical astrophysics and space plasma physics, Earth system science, spacecraft development and data analysis. The scope of the collection is broad, and some undergraduate materials are purchased to support the curriculum. However, this material is fairly limited. Materials are purchased in all formats. There is an increasing amount of information published electronically, and new electronic journals and compact disks are being added at a rapid rate. All languages are purchased, with an emphasis on English language materials. However, materials published in German and French are also routinely acquired. Materials are acquired from a wide variety of publishers, with an emphasis on major scientific publishers such as Springer-Verlag, Wiley, and others. There are a significant number of monographic series on standing order, particularly from scholarly societies such as the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and the International Astronomical Union. Recent materials are emphasized, but retrospective materials are purchased when requested or to replace missing materials.

    Welcome to Berkeley Astronomy
Observational, experimental and theoretical research in Astronomy and Astrophysics at UC Berkeley covers the full range of modern astronomical activity, from studies of the planets, through investigation of stars and the interstellar medium, to inquiry into the origin of galaxies and of the Universe as a whole. Because of its breadth and depth in research opportunities, Berkeley offers an ideal platform for entry into a professional career in astronomical research and teaching. The Berkeley Astronomy Department offers most of the graduate courses in astronomy and astrophysics given on the campus, augmented by related courses in other physical science departments. Research opportunities available to graduate students are organized both by the academic department, and by several organized research units which exist as separate administrative entities. The Radio Astronomy Laboratory supports observational and experimental work in radio astronomy and the Theoretical Astrophysics Center provides an organizational focus for theoretical work. These organizations coexist with the Astronomy Department in
