Health Challenges Facing Young People
Many of the health challenges young people face today are different from those of past decades. Advances in medications and vaccines have largely addressed the illness, disability, and death that common infectious diseases once caused among children. Today, the health of young people, and the adults they will become, is critically linked to the health-related behaviors they choose to adopt.
Damaging Behaviors
Young People Are at Risk Every day, nearly 3,000 young people take up daily smoking.

AWARDED 3rd YEAR OF FUNDING FOR THE
FOOD ASSISTANCE AND NUTRITION RESEARCH SMALL GRANTS PROGRAM
Sponsored by the USDA Economic Research Service
As the first doctoral program in American Indian Studies in the country, and by virtue of our close relationship to tribal colleges awarded land grant status in 1994, AISP has been the ideal partner for this small grants program. Since 1998, seven awards have been made to tribal colleges across the country, including:
  • Oglala Lakota College , Leslie Ray Henry, principal investigator - Assessment of Food Concerns, Nutrition Knowledge and Food Security of Oglala Lakota College Students on the Pine Ridge Reservation. (Funded 1998) This study adapted a survey developed by the South Dakota State University Department of Nutrition and Food Science to assess food concerns, nutrition knowledge and food insecurity on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Researchers compared their results to survey data collected from other South Dakota sites. The results allowed nutrition, health and agriculture personnel to better design and target nutrition education programs on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
  • Che yenne River Community College , John Phillips, principal investigator - A Dietary History and Behavior Study on the Cheyenne River Reservation.

Ethel Austin Martin Program in Human Nutrition Dr. Ethel Austin Martin graduated from SDSU in 1916 and went on to do graduate work at Columbia University and the University of Chicago. She taught at several institutions before joining the National Dairy Council in 1929, where she served as Director of Nutrition Services until her retirement. Dr. Martin was a distinguished nutritionist who was instrumental in developing research grant programs, instituting nutrition conferences, founding journals, and writing several nutrition textbooks.
Before her death in 1993 at age 100, she established an endowment at SDSU with the ultimate objective of providing for a permanent professorship to ensure continuing high-level instruction in the science of nutrition. Dr. Martin's goal was realized in 1997, when the Ethel Austin Martin Chair in Human Nutrition was established and subsequently filled by Dr. Bonny Specker.
Purpose
The purpose of the E.A. Martin Program in Nutrition is to advance knowledge in the science of human nutrition through a multidisciplinary approach, to encourage practical applications in improving human health, and to offer professional enrichment in nutrition for all students, faculty and staff at SDSU.

The Older Americans Act Nutrition Programs
Nutrition – A Critical Service Millions of older adults are malnourished.  Adequate nutrition is essential for healthy aging and the prevention or delay of chronic disease and disease-related disabilities.  Congregate nutrition services improve participants’ health and prevent more costly interventions.  Home-delivered nutrition services enable older adults to avoid or delay costly institutionalization and allow them to stay in their homes and communities.  The need for adequate food and nutrition services by millions of at-risk older adults currently exceeds the resources of the existing programs. These programs are the foundation services of home and community-based care for older adults and their families. Nutrition Services – Important Support for Families in Need American families need help.   It’s that simple.  The nutritious meals and social interaction provided by the Administration on Aging’s (AoA) nutrition programs help families each and every day as these examples show:
  • A 71-year-old American Indian woman who has difficulty walking reports that she couldn’t continue to care for her 81-year-old husband in their home if it wasn’t for the meals. (Colorado)
