AIS Teacher Inservice Program
PLEASE NOTE: INTRODUCTION ARTISTS IN SCHOOLS ROSTER Artists-In-Schools (AIS) is a residency program for K-12 schools, with matching funds from the South Dakota Arts Council (SDAC). Artists-In-Schools residencies range in length from one week to a full school year. A project can be designed to fit all elementary through secondary school needs regardless of size, locale, or existing arts curriculum. By working with teachers, parents and the community, an artist will create a residency that can inspire children to learn more, not just about art, but life itself. These artists share their talents with students of all ages in workshops, demonstrations, seminars and residencies both in and outside the classroom. Even though a residency may last only a short time, participation in AIS can have lasting results in school systems. Artists can help teachers further develop arts curriculum and creative teaching of the arts. The entire school system and community benefit by strengthening their joint commitment to the arts as basic to education.

PUT PEOPLE FIRST. That was the admonition of H. B. Deets, Executive Director of the National Retired Teachers Association, (Division of AARP) in their January house organ. The fundamental goal of our publication is to educate, motivate and elucidate and as many readers realize, we highlight special efforts from time to time such as the strengthening and modernizing of the IDEA and that is why this issue hits that subject so hard and with your support our country will do it. Quoting Deets: "It's time to govern. That means putting aside partisan political interests and putting the interests of the American people first. Following the electionin which less than half of those eligible votedboth parties talked of bipartisanship and cooperation. We hope this talk of bipartisan cooperation will result in bipartisan solutions." We will be pleased to send his entire column to all who send a SASE. IDEA.

http://www.journalstar.com/stories/top/sto3 Many labeled learning-disabled
BY JODI RAVE LEE Lincoln Journal Star A civil rights law for "disabled" school-age children tends to sweep high
numbers of minority youth into special education programs, according to
those familiar with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
"We have a highly disproportionate representation of Native American
children in special education programs," said Dixie Jordan, a parent coordinator at the PACER Center in Minneapolis. She said cultural differences, highly subjective evaluations and a correlation between disability and poverty contribute to the disproportionate numbers. A significant factor, Jordan said, are schools that tend to ignore the guidelines set up under the law. Consequently, a large number of kids are left with unmet needs, according to the National Council on Disability

Special Education Internships
The International Partnership for Service-Learning, in affiliation with The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and its Division of International Special Education and Services (DISES), is pleased to offer cross-cultural programs in 10 nations, combining academic study for credit with internships in programs for individuals with disabilities. Most of these programs follow the same program design as the IPS-L undergraduate programs, which include academic study, living in a homestay with a local family or on a campus with international students, and serving 15-20 hours a week in established service agency. With the Special Eduation focus, your service will be in the form of an internship serving individuals with special needs, supervised by professionals; and your academic studies will focus on the culture in which you are living and the issues of children and adults with special needs. Internship opportunities include serving in schools, residential settings, clinics, sheltered workshops, and other programs for children and adults with a variety of special needs such as:
