21. Illinois Wildlife Federation – Advocating Practical, Scientific Management
Focused on ethical hunting practices and management and conservation of fish and wildlife, forest, mineral, water and soil resources. Includes history, newsletter, legislation issues, memorial fund, links and contacts.
http://www.illinoiswildlife.org/
ILLINOIS WILDLIFE FEDERATION has been a consistent leader in protecting our natural resources and needs. Our members act as spokesmen, advocates and leaders for Illinois' great out-of-doors. The Illinois Wildllife Federation began in 1936 as conservation clubs throughout Illinois came together. Those early conservation leaders organized with the purpose of taking conservation out of politics. The work resulted in the creation of the Illinois Department of Wildlife and Parks, a conservation agency that has been a model for other states. Since then, the Federation has undertaken many successful projects that ensure Illinois continues to be the leading state in conservation policies and funding. Today our members continue practicing the tradition of practical scientific management of fish and wildlife, forest, mineral, water and soil resources. We encourage and advocate the long-term protection and enhancement of all outdoor recreation in Illinois. E-Mail: Info@IllinoisWildlife.org

Support to Investment: Land Management, Soil Conservation and Soil Fertility
The FAO Investment Centre is assisting member governments to formulate and mobilize funding for investment projects aimed at improving land management, soil conservation and soil fertility. Enhancement and sustainable maintenance of soil fertility is of critical importance for many developing and transition countries faced with limited farming areas, poor land and water management, and nutrient-deficient soils. Farmers and policymakers alike are increasingly aware that declines in soil fertility are a primary cause of food insecurity and malnutrition, and the migration of rural people to urban areas in search of other income opportunities. The Centre is helping these countries and its partner international financing institutions to design and prepare investment projects in which communities assume the main responsibility for conservation of their environment, natural resources and biodiversity (see also Support to Investment: Safeguarding the Environment and Natural Resources ). It works closely with FAO’s

http://www.wrc.govt.nz/lm/soil.htm
About 40 per cent of the Wellington region is erosion-prone hill country . Soil erosion can be prevented or reduced by improving the way the land is used, perhaps by planting trees, or by allowing native bush to grow in areas that are at risk from erosion. The Wellington Regional Council works with landowners to control soil erosion in both hill-country and alluvial plain environments. Individual property conservation plans are prepared for landowners and erosion control works are carried out on a cost-sharing basis with the Council. Six catchment control schemes are administered the Wellington Regional Council in consultation with local communities, and a range of works undertaken to protect community assets from soil erosion and flooding. Click on a thumbnail to view a larger picture This series of photographs shows how a highly-eroding piece of land in the Wairarapa has been repaired during a 25-year period using a mix of exotic planting and natural indigenous re-vegetation. For more information or advice on soil conservation, contact the Wellington Regional Council's Masterton office on 06-378-2484. The Wellington Regional Council also manages 3750 hectares of soil conservation reserve forests in South Wairarapa - Tauanui, Hiwinui, Rough Hill and Stoney Creek.

Soil Use and Management provides an international forum for those applying scientific principles to understand and solve important soil problems as they affect crop production and environmental issues. The journal also aims to communicate an understanding of management techniques for the sustainable use of land. Papers taking a broad view of 'use' and 'management' covering agriculture, forestry and amenity provision are accepted. Topics covered include: soil-crop interactions, environmental protection, soil erosion and conservation, pollution control, restoration and reclamation of land, evaluation of soil surveys and development of methodology. Problem
Short-term drought stress limits crop yields one of three years in the Southeast. Methods to improve infiltration of intense rainfall, and to increase plant available soil water are needed to improve productivity and reduce economic risks. This is especially true for sandy coastal plain soils with root-limiting surface and subsurface compaction.
