Undergraduates with motivation and outstanding academic promise will find special intellectual challenge in the University Honors Program at The Catholic University of America. The program hones skills in critical thinking and lays a solid foundation in the classical liberal arts. Its interdisciplinary core provides an integrated worldview and stresses traditional values of our Christian heritage. In small, seminar-style classes, Honors students engage in intensive exchange with the university’s best scholar-teachers. Writing and communication skills are given special attention. Students also participate in research projects and enrichment programs outside the classroom. Rules and Regulations The core sequences of the University Honors Program cross disciplines and form an integrated liberal arts curriculum. Interconnections with requirements in a student’s area of concentration are established on an individual basis. The Honors Advisory Council selects freshmen for participation after they have been accepted by the Office of Admissions. Selection is based on results of the standardized college entrance examinations (S.A.T. 1300) and secondary school achievement (G.P.A. 3.5; top 10 percent of class). For transfer students and upperclassmen, who may apply for admittance after an initial interview, a minimum 3.5 G.P.A. after the completion of one full semester load at CUA is required.

A Grinnell Alum Who Went on to Teach for America Shares Her Experiences
    By Amanda Davis
While in her first year of teaching at Andrew Hill High School in San José, Adrienne Enriquez ‘98 was stopped by a school official and asked why she wasn’t in uniform. Confused, she explained that she didn’t realize that she, as a teacher, was required to wear the same uniforms as the students. It wasn’t the only time she was mistaken for a student.
As a 21-year-old college graduate, Enriquez joined Teach for America (TFA). The program recruits college students of all majors to commit to a two-year teaching assignment in some of America’s most under-resourced school districts. TFA teachers are hired and paid as other first-year teachers. However, a TFA corps member is only hired after the school district has exhausted its pool of certified or credentialed teachers. This policy, made between TFA and individual school districts and enforced by law, helps concentrate TFA’s human resources on the most needy schools.
The summer after TFA applicants are accepted, they participate in a six-week intensive training. In addition to learning about basic skills like making lesson plans and classroom management, part of the training entailed teaching at summer school sessions. Though Enriquez said that she felt “absolutely prepared” to go into the classroom after she completed her training, she said that in the years since she started teaching, the training program has improved dramatically. Enriquez says that she would feel ten times more prepared had she gone through the training offered now.

    The Sociological Perspective
Sociology originated in Western Europe in the early nineteenth century, with attempts to understand the structure and dynamics of the industrialisation process, and to resolve its concomitant social problems, like high levels of crime. It is concerned largely with urban societies, and seeks to understand how individuals fit into mass society, how inequalities based on race, gender and class arise and are perpetuated, how bureaucracies work.
