"Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world." Using Stories About Heroes to Teach Values by Tony R. Sanchez November 1998 RECENT TRENDS IN VALUES EDUCATION There has been a renewal of concern during the 1990s about teaching and learning values standards that everyone should have about what is good or bad. And leading educators have recommended stories about heroes as a main means of teaching and learning values. Teaching methods that stress only cognitive skills in the analysis and clarification of choices about values have fallen from favor. The current trend is against teaching neutrally about values. Rather, the trend is for teaching values in concert with methods of analysis and judgment that yield answers about right and wrong, better and worse concerning personal behavior and the common good (Leming 1996). Prominent educators recommend that certain widely held values or virtues should be at the core of the school curriculum for the purpose of systematically developing the character of students. They stress the integration of cognitive development and character development through "perspective-taking, moral reasoning, thoughtful decision-making, and moral self-knowledge" (Lickona 1993, 9). And they also urge the use of personal models heroes in history, fiction, and current events to exemplify and encourage emulation of particular virtues or desirable traits of character, such as honesty, civility, courage, perseverance, loyalty, self-restraint, compassion, tolerance, fairness, respect for the worth and dignity of the individual, responsibility for the common good, and so forth (Leming 1996; Lickona 1991).

Dr. Anya Bernstein, Director of Studies The Social Studies concentration is a unique program of study at Harvard College. Originating in 1960 through the efforts of a small and distinguished group of faculty, it reflected the belief that the study of the social world required an integration of the disciplines of history and political science, sociology and economics, anthropology and philosophy. Concerned with the fragmentation caused by increasing disciplinary specialization, the faculty and students of Social Studies seek an integrated approach to the study of social phenomena that synthesizes the findings as well as the methods of various modes of social inquiry. Accordingly, the common introduction to the concentration in Social Studies 10 is to read closely and at length some of the thinkers who have durably shaped the way we understand society, addressing the questions of how it holds together, the obligations it imposes, the possibilities for liberty and economic development it both nurtures and constrains. Sophomores in Social Studies 10 will thus study the modern foundations of Adam Smith, Mill, Tocqueville, Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Freud; they conclude with consideration of the problematic issues posed in contemporary society by theorists of gender, language, and knowledge. The tutorial will also introduce one or more major historical case studies in light of the explanatory approaches students have worked through. Throughout the year-long sophomore tutorial the objective is to teach students to read theoretical arguments carefully and critically and to juxtapose them against historical developments and social experience.

    Statistics
Professor S. C. Samuel Kou, Head Tutor Statistics is a relatively young department organized around the rapidly growing body of knowledge about quantitative methods for the analysis of data, the making of rational decisions under uncertainty, the design of experiments, and the modeling of randomness in the social and natural sciences. Statistics has a theoretical core surrounded by a large number of domains of application in economics, psychology, biology and medicine, sociology, population sciences, government, anthropology, history, astronomy, physics, and computer science. A basic requirement of a concentration in Statistics is to acquire the mathematical tools for a rigorous understanding of applications to substantive fields. This includes linear algebra and calculus to the level of Mathematics or Applied Mathematics 21b. A non-mathematical introduction to the field is provided by Statistics 100: Introduction to Quantitative Methods. The basic theoretical introduction is provided by Statistics 110: Introduction to Probability, and Statistics 111: Introduction to Theoretical Statistics. These courses provide grounding in traditional and modern approaches to modeling, exploratory inference, and testing and estimation. They should equip students to take the other Department of Statistics courses dealing in greater detail with special models and procedures, as well as to move into applied fields.

... home BSc in Deaf Studies How to Apply Units The BSc in Deaf Studies is a full-time undergraduate programme which evolved from earlier Certificate and Diploma programmes. It is a training programme in the area of deafness, sign language, the Deaf community and culture, and service provision to Deaf people. It was first offered in September 1999 as a three year modular programme with an emphasis on the acquisition of fluency in British Sign Language and an understanding of issues relating to sign language and the Deaf community. The teaching is mainly provided within the Centre for Deaf Studies; some further units are taught in conjunction with the School of Policy Studies also in the Faculty of Social Sciences. In order to maximise the applicability of this programme to various career fields, units form groups of options with related themes. These groups include Deaf education, mental health and psychology, media and politics as they relate to Deaf people, linguistics, society and culture in relation to the Deaf community, and English/BSL interpreting. Core knowledge and skills are presented in the mandatory units in each year. Those who take our undergraduate courses in Deaf Studies will go into fields of interpreting, and work for organisations for Deaf people and social services. Many Deaf students will teach sign language or work alongside other professionals in schools or enter research careers.
