From Fetzer To Finley: Carolina's Olympic Sports Have Done It All This Year UNC looks to clinch Carlyle Cup Sunday.
April 20, 2002 By Dave Lohse
Associate Athletic Communications Director
Chalk up the 2001-02 athletic year as another sterling one for the Olympic sports program at the University of North Carolina. As the spring sports season begins its transition from conference championship to NCAA championship phase in the next few weeks Carolina's excellence has become abundantly clear once again. On Saturday, the Tar Heels' women's outdoor track and field team won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, giving UNC four league titles this school year. Three more Tar Heel teams will be in ACC championship matches on Sunday in women's lacrosse versus Maryland, men's tennis versus Georgia Tech and women's tennis versus Duke. In addition to women's outdoor track and field, Carolina has also won ACC titles this year in women's soccer, volleyball and women's swimming and diving. Carolina is bidding this year to lead or share the lead in the number of ACC titles won for the 15th successive year. The last time any school won more conference championships in a single school year than Carolina was 1986-87. Wow! With the Sears Directors' Cup standings set to be updated again this coming Thursday, the Tar Heel athletic program currently stands a solid second in this year's rankings and barring a complete collapse in the spring, which appears highly unlikely, the Tar Heels are destined for a Top Five finish with a great chance to finish as high as second.

As sports return to Afghanistan, so do Olympic hopes
Associated Pres
KABUL, Afghanistan He looks out from his office window onto the cracked, empty stadium below, and he points to the goal. "There," says the head of Afghanistan's Olympic committee, "is where they hanged people." Now, in the new Afghanistan, where peace is a political mantra and most ills are blamed on the last guys who ran the place, the soccer field in Kabul Sports Stadium is used for something different. These days, they use it to play soccer. In a land buffeted by 23 years of war, sports was hardly a priority. But this week, as Afghanistan plans to send its first delegation in three years to an international Olympic meeting, the athletes of an isolated country have a reason, however small, to hope. "We are an independent country again, and we are ready to compete," the Olympic chief, Anwar Jekdalek, said Saturday. "All the world recognizes Afghanistan again." It's not quite that easy. The International Olympic Committee still hasn't reinstated Afghanistan, which it barred in 1999 in part because the harsh Islamic rule of the Taliban militia prevented women from competing.

The Game
The basic objective of the game is for one team to force the ball by kicking it or propelling it with the chest or head into the opponent's goal. The goal mouth is 24 feet wide and eight feet high, spanned by a crossbar and backed by netting. One point is awarded for each goal scored. The winning team is the one with the highest number of points. The game is played in two 45-minute halves. Only two substitutions are permitted, per side, per game. If the two substitutions are used and a player is later injured, the team must play short. If regulation time ends in a tie, an overtime period may be played. If the teams remain tied at the conclusion of overtime, the game may be decided by a kicking contest in which each team has up to five unobstructed (except for the goalkeeper) attempts to put the ball in the opponent's goal.

    Amy Griffin Position:
Assistant Coach Experience: 6th Year Former United States National Team goalkeeper Amy Griffin is in her seventh year on the Washington coaching staff. The former Amy Allmann was named assistant coach on March 26, 1996 after serving as the head coach at the University of New Mexico the previous three seasons. A native of Federal Way, Wash., Griffin was reunited with Husky head coach Lesle Gallimore who she served with as an assistant at San Diego State in 1991 and 1992. Griffin helped Washington reach the 1996 NCAA Tournament in her first season, tutoring Tina Thompson who finished her career as Washington’s leader in nearly every goalkeeping statistic. In 1997, Griffin was charged with tutoring freshman goalkeeper Leslie Weeks who finished with four shutouts in her inaugural season. The Huskies returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1998 despite injuries that attacked the goalkeeping depth. Griffin worked with three different goalkeepers en route to the playoff berth. During the last three seasons, Griffin mentored Hope Solo who was the 2001 Pac-10 Player of the Year along with being a finalist for the Hermann Trophy and Missouri Athletic Club award. Solo garnered second-team All-America acclaim in each of the last two seasons and is the school’s all-time leader in shutouts (16) and goals against average (0.95).

OLYMPIC STADIUM BERLIN - 2006 FIFA SOCCER WORLD CUP, GERMANY
Berlin's Olympic Stadium is being refurbished in keeping with its listed building status while also incorporating facilities to enable it to cater for the demands of a contemporary events arena. The stadium will play host to the final of the 2006 FIFA Soccer World Cup but must be ready by 2004 to conform to FIFA's requirements. BERLIN’S 1936 OLYMPIC STADIUM The stadium, originally designed by architect, Werner March, was built between 1934 and 1936 for the 1936 Olympic Games, replacing the "German Stadium", designed by Werner March's father, Otto March. As well as the oval-shaped Olympic Stadium, famous for its 25m-wide Marathon Gate, the complex encompasses hockey, swimming and equestrian stadia as well as a theatre. The Stadium has undergone major work prior to the latest renovations. In 1969, the cinder track was replaced by a synthetic track and, in 1974, it underwent a structural modernisation during which time an acrylic-glass roof was installed. Initially a competition was launched to redesign the stadium to become a modern multifunctional facility, while maintaining the stadium's historical integrity. This was won by German firm NGM Architekten but not before some interesting entries were considered.
