Chinese women hobbled but confident
Click the image to launch the clip Sun Wen believes the Chinese team will regain its World Cup form. Start Archives Click here for Archives of Olympic Update. For the Chinese women's soccer team, the pain of their final loss last year to the United States is still a fresh memory. In Sydney, they will get their chance to erase those bad memories by taking Olympic gold. But it won't be easy. China has played badly in their warm-up games for the Olympics and is headed for Australia with worrying injuries to key players. But they are still confident they can revive the type of play that saw them march all the way to last year's World Cup final. "During the Olympics, every game is essential," says team captain Sun Wen. "Recently, we have been undergoing strict training because we were not in our best condition. Things will get better." Sun Wen, who recently became the first woman ever to be nominated for the Asian player of the year award, has been nursing a troublesome leg injury. She's been playing cautiously and admits she may be going to the Olympics at less than 100 percent. Add to that an injury to fellow star Liu Ying, and it could be an even more painful Olympic Games for China who must worry now, just to get through the preliminary round of the competition.

History
Soccer was supposed to be on the program for the first modern Olympics in 1896, but it was cancelled because no teams entered, although some players showed up. The sport officially entered the Olympics in 1900 and it's been on the program ever since. The Olympic stand against professionalism led directly to the creation of soccer's World Cup tournament. After several countries withdrew from the 1928 Olympic tournament because their professionals weren't allowed to play, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) decided to hold its own quadrennial world championship, beginning in 1929. In 1984, the International Olympic Committee decided to allow professionals to compete, but only if they hadn't taken part in World Cup play, which still left out most of the world's best players. The rule was amended in 1992 to allow professional players under 23 years of age in the Olympics. Since 1996, each team has been allowed to have three professional players over 22. Women's soccer was added to the Olympic program in 1996.
