With the formation of the National Heritage Board on 1st August 1993, the National Museum of Singapore was restructured into three specialised museums: Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore Art Museum and Singapore History Museum; the last of which is now housed in the National Museum Building. Prior to 1972, the emphasis of the museum was not on the history of Singapore. This had to do with the first British Resident and Commandant of Singapore (1819 - 1823), Major-General William Farquhar (1774 - 1839). An enthusiastic natural history amateur, he collected numerous local plant and animal specimens and commissioned artists to paint them.

Vol. 9 No. 1 March 1999 Sensing history It is with much pleasure that we welcome the publication of a significant new bibliography on Singapore. A Sense of History was published by the National University of Singapore Library last year, a combined effort of a team of librarians headed by Tim Yap Fuan. Although it was modestly subtitled a select bibliography on the history of Singapore , it is in fact a fairly extensive work as it contains about 3,500 entries. Three features about the publication will impress the reader at even the most casual glance. Firstly, the presentation is excellent; the cover is attractive, the proof reading thorough, and the format is clear and easy to the eye - a point which will be appreciated if one examines less well presented and hence less user-friendly bibliographies. Secondly, it is obvious that the compilation of this work is the product of dedication and hard work. Despite the advent of computers, librarians are still loaded with a heavy burden of routine making the compilation of bibliographies such as this, a labour of love. Thirdly and most importantly, the bibliography reveals the depth and richness of the NUS Library's collection built up though a consistent policy of collection development over four decades. Indeed, the Library's Singapore/Malaysia Collection and Microform Collection are two of its most important resources for research on Singapore and the surrounding region. In the compilation of a bibliography, there are two main considerations: coverage and organisation - what is to be included and how is the material to be arranged. In terms of coverage, the compilers have taken history at its broadest meaning which is as it should, and there are subsections on the economy, education, law, politics and so on. However, it would have been useful to have a section on reference books so that important publications such as Paul Kratoska's

Ernest Chew has graciously shared this essay, which first appeared in Raffles Town Club
5. Controversy and Conclusion
Despite Farquhar's attempts to stake his claim as the founder of the British settlement of Singapore, it was Raffles who received most of the credit and recognition from his widow's Memoir of 1830 to Boulger's biography of 1897, to the various biographical studies of the 20th century from Egerton and Coupland to Wurtzburg and Collis. In Singapore Stamford Raffles is commemorated by various road and place names, and institutions. The solitary street named after Farquhar, in the Kampong Glam area, has disappeared with urban renewal. This was actually near the property that Farquhar bequeathed to his local Eurasian mistress and their children, his first family. He later married a Scottish lady in 1828, and had another family for details (Bastin 19-20). However, some historians of Singapore have tried to redress the balance. Ironically, it was a former Raffles Professor of History, Dr Ken Tregonning, who championed Farquhar at Raffles' expense. Tregonning wrote:

Singapore History Museum Collection on Chinese Overseas The Singapore History Museum seeks to explore, discover, and enhance the national identity of Singapore by preserving and interpreting the nation's history and material culture in the context of its multi-cultural origins. We have established a collection of historical photographs and prints on Chinese Overseas. In addition, we maintain a specialized library that collects literature on museology and museum management. In our exhibition planning, we encourage collaboration with community organizations in Singapore. For example, in our recent exhibition on the Hakka community, we worked closely with the Nanyang Khek Guild. The museum also maintains a network of contacts with overseas museums and research institutes. Through this network, the museum is kept informed of exhibitions and collections concerning the Chinese diaspora. back to museums

History Main
A Visit to the Singapore History Museum: 26 April 2001 The trip to the History Museum was certainly an enriching one. And a pleasant surprise as well. After all, most of us have often committed the mistake of relating the word "museum" with images of old, dreary people walking around and looking at historic exhibits and I suppose, to a certain extent, a few of us were definitely not expecting what was awaiting us!! There were mainly three exhibitions that we were keeping a lookout for: two temporary exhibits-"The Secret Societies" and "Power and Propaganda: The Pacific War in Retrospect? and the permanent exhibit: " From Colony to Nation" The Secret Societies…
The long sets of rules, regulations and rituals to be observed upon the joining of a secret society was unlike any other that we have seen on television and had us absorbed, wondering how it was like for the members then. Power and Propaganda: The Pacific War in Retrospect
Each to his own, but I dare say, for quite a lot of us, this was the most interesting of the three. Power and Propaganda is not something that we encounter on a regular basis in our everyday life in Singapore. There were posters, some funny, some that take a little while to comprehend and others that aimed to make us take a step back and ponder. There was this one poster created for the US troops, with pictures of appetizing food meant to weaken the determination and spirit of the soldiers. The effectiveness of it lies in the knowledge of the psychology of the human mind that is homesickness experienced by the soldiers then.
