Our early beginnings... The early years until the Second World War were an uphill struggle as the quantity surveyor was relatively an unknown profession, let alone accepted by both building owners and contractors. It was only in 1938 that things began to take a turn for the better when the usefulness of the bills of quantities was proven in the contract for the construction of the European Swimming Club at Tanjong Rhu. The advent of war in Europe (1939) and South East Asia (1941) severely affected the quantity surveying profession. During the Second World War, David Waters and Eric Watson became prisoners of war, and were sent to work on the Burma/Siam railway. Sadly, David Waters died there. The office was kept open manned by a skeleton staff headed by Seah Mong Hee until January 1942 when Japanese bombs fell heavily on Singapore. With the Japanese surrender in 1945, Eric Watson restarted the firm in early 1946. Encouraged by post war reconstruction work, branch offices were established in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur in 1947 and 1948 respectively.

SINGAPORE BRIEF HISTORY Since about A.D. 100's to the 1200's people have lived on Singapore Island. Some people still argue that the history of the Chinese people living on Singapore Island goes back to Johor. In Sanskrit language Singapore meant lion city because of the many tigers mistaken as lions that lived there. In 1377 invaders from Java destroyed the entire island so it became a base for pirates and a fishing village. Temasek or Sea Town was Singapore's Malay name. Sir Stamford Raffles founded the trading post in Singapore in 1819. The fourteenth century was not a great time for the Singapore Trading post. The trading Center brought more then 10,000 Chinese to Singapore. In that time the trading post was in the Srivijaya Empire before it was destroyed. The destroyers were the Majapahit Empire. On February 15, 1942 the second year of the Pacific war, Japanese took control of Singapore. Singapore was considered the capitol of the Japanese's southern regions. Singapore was supposed to be the military supply base. The southern regions headquarters was Singapore. In 1945 the British saved Singapore from the Japanese. In 1946 Singapore was made a separate crown colony of Britain. The Dutch and British compiled a founding interest in Singapore because of trading. In 1955 the people of Singapore elected their first legislature. About that time they started asking for complete independence. In 1957 all the people who lived in Singapore for eight years became a citizen. In 1959 Singapore obtained a government of their own, Britain still had control of the defense and foreign affairs. Lee Kwan Yew became the prime minister of Singapore. Lee's administration took a lot of responsibility on the growth of the nation. On September 16, 1963 Singapore joined Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak. Singapore became one of the cleanest, safest, and most prosperous cities in Asia. In 1965 Singapore became independent.

Modern Singapore In the 1959 general elections the People's Action party (PAP) won control of the government and continued in power after winning the 1963 elections. Under the policies of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew , Singapore's economic base was strengthened and a greater degree of social and cultural homogeneity was achieved. With the establishment in the 1960s of the Economic Development Board, the Development Bank of Singapore, and the International Trading Company and the subsequent influx of foreign investment, Singapore's industrial base was diversified, expanded, and modernized. Following a referendum (1962), Singapore merged (Aug., 1963) with Malaya, Sarawak, and Sabah to form the Federation of Malaysia. Frictions soon arose, however, and Singapore was, by mutual agreement, separated from the federation in Aug., 1965, becoming an independent republic. The exclusion of Singapore was largely due to Malay fears of Singapore's Chinese majority and its potential economic domination in the federation.
