OLYMPIC HISTORY Shooting had a friend in the highest of places when the Modern Olympic Games opened in Athens in 1896. None other, in fact, than Pierre de Coubertin, who was a pistol shooting champion for France. The first president of the International Olympic Committee introduced four pistol and two rifle events at the first modern Olympiad. The sport has featured at all bar two Games since, St Louis in 1904 and Amsterdam in 1928 not having staged shooting events. His record-breaking did not stop there, however, and over two days at the Stockholm Games of 1912 he established two more Olympic milestones which have stood the test of time. First, he became the oldest medal winner in an individual event, by taking the bronze in the Running Deer, double-shot at the age of 64 years and 256 days; then, he became the oldest ever gold medal winner when triumphant as a member of the Swedish Running Deer, single-shot team at the age of 64 years 257 days.

Olympic History: Shooting
The art of marksmanship had a different role long before it became a sport. Shooting dates back to man's earliest origins as spear-throwing contests improved hunting skills. During the 13th and 14th centuries, the first shooting clubs were formed in German-speaking countries exclusively for men and the wheel-lock musket was used. Bows and wheel-lock muskets were shot from the standing position at first and by the 16th century, public matches showcased firearms with rifled barrels. Matches and shooting festivals usually one-shot matches fired at painted wood targets were usually held on holidays and prizes were usually of gold. In 1710, target shooting made its way to the U.S. and the events were called "turkey shoots" at first with food items being the prizes.

UIT Shooting - Aiming For Athens
Home Comment Form The Events Pictures ... About the Author
What is UIT Shooting?
The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), formerly the UIT is the governing body of the International Amateur Shooting Sports at international and world-wide levels of competition, including World Championships and the Olympic Games. USA Shooting is the national governing body for ISSF-style shooting in the United States by authority of the US Olympic Committee and the ISSF. In the Olympics, the shooting sports continue to draw the third-greatest number of countries and impose participation quotas to keep competitors to a manageable number. One of the greatest surges in participation came in 1984, when separate women's events were first added to the Olympic program. The ISSF recognizes a huge number of different shooting events in rifle, pistol, shotgun, and running target though only 17 events are featured in the Olympic Games. While there are great differences between disciplines, all rely on stamina and concentration to successfully shoot so many rounds with such precision. The sport's reliance on such skills makes shooting a sport in which size and age, unlike athletics or gymnastics, have little bearing on success. Oscar Swahn from Sweden was an amazing 72 years old in 1920 when he won his last shooting medal to become the oldest medalist in the history of the Games. The youngest shooter to win a medal was 16 year old Konstantin Lukashik from Belarus, who won a Gold medal in 1992. It is not uncommon for Olympic shooters to have been training for more than 20 years. Due to the competitive longevity of the sport, several shooters have competed in four or more Games.

SCHIESSPORTSCHULE II - or - SCHIESSPORTSCHULE I SCHIESSPORTSCHULE DIALOGUES II The United States Women's International Rifle Organization announces the publication of SCHIESSPORTSCHULE DIALOGUES II, a soft cover book, written by United States World and Olympic International Rifle Champions, who dominated the shooting world for more than a decade. It is an outgrowth of an Olympic development shooting school, organized by USWIRO, for elite international rifle competitors and their coaches immediately following the 1978 U.S. International Shooting Championships and Team Tryouts at the Ben Avery Range, Phoenix, Arizona. Dedicated to Deiter Anschutz, the book is a result of lectures that were taped, transcribed and edited by members of USWIRO. The organization disbanded in 1983 with all it's goals achieved. Publication of this book is a final project by former USWIRO officers. Dr. William Cole, President of EDGE Learning Institute, presents the complete "Increasing Human Effectiveness" seminar and a "Follow Up" lecture. This is the mental training course used by the U.S. Shooting Team and U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, Ft. Benning, Georgia, since it's original presentation at SCHIESSPORTSCHULE II. This material will give an understanding of how the mind and emotions function, with useable mental techniques to improve the mental aspect of shooting. This book is a "must have" for shooters in all disciplines, because the approach to winning doesn't change. It will be particularly valuable for serious collegiate and international shooters and coaches.

ISSF–International Shooting Sport Federation
Step by step to "ISSF" History of the "UIT" Shooting with the rifle, pistol and shotgun has been practiced in many countries since the Middle Ages. During the 19th Century, however, shooting also developed into a sport: Associations, federations, councils, confederations, unions or organizations were formed in some countries, using different words to describe the alliance of shooters in clubs or the alliance of clubs in local, regional or national organizations. History books report of shooting competitions in some European countries as early as the 11th Century, but the modern concept of our sport began in the 19th Century with the development of shooting equipment, and several of the present day national federations were formed. At the first Olympic Games of the modern times in the year 1896 in Athens, nine different sports were placed on the program by the International Olympic Committee, and the shooting sport had the highest number of participants in these first Olympic Games. The first world championship in our sport was organized in 1897 in France, and eight national shooting federations founded the "Union Internationale des Federations et Associations Nationales de Tir" on 7th July 1907 in Zurich, Switzerland. This Union was dissolved in 1915 during World War I but was reorganized in 1921 under the new name of "Union Internationale de Tir", also using the initials, UIT.

Basketball, the sport invented 93 years prior in Springfield, Mass., made its first Olympic appearance on its native soil. Waltzing past all opposition, both the USA men's and women's basketball teams captured gold medals. It was the first time in Olympic basketball history that a single nation won the men's and women's tournaments in the same Olympiad.

The 1984 Olympic women's basketball competition began with some disappointment, as the eagerly awaited Olympic showdown between the United States and Soviet Union women was once again prevented by politics, this time it was the Soviet team that did not compete. However, by the time the 1984 competition ended, the U.S. women had plenty to celebrate as the Americans cruised to their first Olympic gold medal with a perfect 6-0 slate, and in the process had outscored their opponents by an average of 32.7 points-per-game.
